Lake of Fire

Saw 'Lake of Fire' this evening. It's a two and half hour documentary on abortion in the US. It's a very well done piece with lots of interviews of people on both sides of the abortion issue, from radical militant fundamentalists to pro choice feminists. It spends a fair amount of time on the murder of physicians by anti-abortionists and in an interview with 'Jane Roe' (of Roe v Wade) who was converted to fundamentalism by the slimiest used car salesman/evangelist you can imagine (Flip Benham). It also spends time analyzing Operation Rescue and Randall Terry who is a graduate of the same Bible College as me. I don't know when the footage and interviews were shot but there was no mention of the fact that he left his wife for his secretary and has a gay son. It might have made for some interesting questioning since lots of Terry's cohorts in the film are outspoken proponents of executing homosexuals.
The pro choice side is represented by Dershowitz, Chomsky, Singer and Steinbock along with Kate Michaelson.
It's only showing on the film society screen in Denver.

There's nothing there to interpret. God thought that abortion was such a complicated and difficult moral issue that he decided not to issue any general edict on the question but to just let women come to their own decisions.

Doesn't midrash indicate that newborns are considered viable only after a certain number of days, postpartum? Isn't that why newborn boys are not immediately circumcised by the watchamacullum guy?

If the mother's life is in grave danger or the kid to be born is truly unwanted, no point in bringing it to this already cruel world. Go and check the orphanages around the world, you will see my point. However, I don't condone abortion as an active birth control means and I am sure no women in their right mind would do so anyways.

It could be, I'm not sure. Similar arguments were developed by Christian theologians concerning when the fetus got a soul. Aquinas (I believe) basing his argument on Aristotle's views on motion, claimed it occured at quickening which itself happened at different times for male and female fetuses.

Dershowitz mentions a fact with which I was unfamiliar. He says that ultra orthodox Jews consider it a sin if a married couple fails to attempt to conceive a child when the woman is fertile. "Forgive me Father for I have not fu**ed."

Thats a heavy hitting cast supporting the abortion side while they use the militant abortion right to support the anti-abortion side.

How many people (like myself) did they interview that are against abortion on non-theological grounds?

Where does it say, "and this applies to abortion."? The word 'abortion' does not occur in the Bible. You're the one deciding that "Thou shalt not murder." applies to abortion.
