148mph on an open public road, no matter how you try to rationalize it to yourself, is neither reasonable or prudent.

All right, all you fellow OBK brethren of mine, and any of you with diesel breath who are feeling particularly sanctimonious:

Let's try it this way:

Tell me NONE of you ever bought a car, and never had the impulse to "see what she'd do".

A guy thing, that's all. Like beer broads and baseball, all of that. "Because it's there"

On a theoretical level, sure, I wouldn't expect much sympathy from some rule crazy cop, get caught doing that.

But: Take a 6 lane road like a road like a bowling alley, no traffic of any kind- NOT ONE car, like a tree falling in the forest with no one there, issue of road quality, visibility, obstructions on the road, car is safely engineered to run at that speed all day long, same as some 1979 240 Diesel automatic - and WHO hasn't ownd one of those and never floored it - and driver is alert, sober, in good condition, familiar with the car, which is also in good mechanical condition on Z rated tires, and lowered to reduct wind resistance - all together a "perfect storm" for a good run.

It was time to probe the limits. So I did. I didn't say I did it every day, and don't feel likely to ever want to do it again. But I am glad I did it once.
And NOT sorry.

It wasn't even like peering into the abyss or anything. Just driving a 560SEC really fast. Letting the car do what it was meant to do

It may be hard to imagine, but it was EXACTLY like going 60 mph. Just the wind roar was much, much more (especially around the outside rear view mirrors)

Like on the autobahn. Drawing "Child abuse" parallels may be fun, for people, but it is ridiculous.

I don't feel it is as ridiculous as hypocrisy, but will cease to hijack your thread further.

Have fun, I don't care if you drive 250MPH on public roads. Just do it in a manner so the only life you are risking is your own. I have been over 100 countless times, but always when the road was empty so if I messed up I'd only be killing myself. You know what I like saying, "you have to pay to play".

Its a free country, if I run off the road at 150mph because I was testing my MB, then I have to live/die with that.

Speed isn't dangerious.

Jim, I hear ya bro.

I got plenty of tickets in my 300E. Mostly all speeding, on highways. Like Hattie said - speed on its own isn't dangerous per se - it's the stopping abruptly part that gets you. (Ok, that from Clarkson).

That said, I also choose when and where to hit the throttle. The temptation was bad enough with the 300E, which cruised comfortably at 190 Km/h, but my E430 is even worse.

This engine doesn't even feel like it is working at 150 Km/h, even right up to the limiter at 220 Km/h, the car still has some left. It doesn't shake, shimmy or feel unsafe. Just...nice.

I completely agree with your first post, and know the feeling well. Once you cruise at around 175 Km/h or more, and you slow back down to say 120 Km/h or so, it doesn't feel like you are moving. These cars are designed in part for sustained high-speed cruising, no doubt about it. I occasionally take her out late at night for a well-timed blast on some quiet highway...

I used to be a rampent speeder. A couple of track sessions with the Porsche club cured me. If you want to speed go to the track. Its damn difficult to guarentee that the only person your going to kill or hurt is yourself on a public road.

It's always kind of spooky doing that on a public road. I had a friend who was going 130 in his Audi. He hit a pothole, lost control and both he and his girlfriend died. Very tragic.

Just be careful doing that, you may think it's safe but there is always something out there to prove you wrong.

That is why nobody is complaining about the long service intervals on modern cars,in Germany.Computer will send you for service every 3-4k miles, otherwise will be no oil to replace, just change filter and ad...I know my mother, back in the old country has no carpet left under the gas pedal,on a 3 year old car.Trucks are usually going around 100 mph,and there is no fun behind a chain of semi trucks going 100 mph on a rainy day(plenty of them in Germany),you have to go faster, and look in the rearview mirror just as much as forward, otherwise you might miss the big BMW doing 160 mph,and that is quite scary.

I received a speeding ticket in my 300D soo... they can get the driver in trouble.. or if the cop is a jerk and sits right before the sign issuing a lower speed which also so happened to be blocked by a big rig with another big rig on my ass...

I need a radar detector...

Die German Green party, rot in hell!

On the list of things I have to do before I die is drive the Autobahn, in a car that can properly take advantage of it. Like a V12 MB with the limiter dead, or a 911 Turbo. Seeing that no speed limit sign would be a trip.

Funk that--just save up a couple of grand and buy a ticket to Atlanta for Skip (B) Skool. Autobahn is fun, but getting ahold of a ride like you are talking about you would need a friend who lives there and owns one--they have the exotic rental thing figured out in Germany (my friends all had crappy Alfas or vws)

European delivery!

The Skip Barbor school would probably be more fun though.

Yeah when my dads friend went to Germany he got a crappy VW, top speed was like 120. I don't need to go to Germany for that.

Driving over 100 mph on a public road in the US shows little regard for the safety of the other taxpayers who also own the road. Other drivers would never know how to react to another car driving that fast(over 100mph).

Have you ever seen what happens when you have a high speed accident? They have to scrape your body parts off the road with a shovel. I've been to Europe, and it's not a pretty sight.

Speed kills, really.
