You guys know that seismologists want you input if you happened to note the exact time and location of the earthquake when you felt it. The Richter Scale is useful for TV but those folks are working on other methods and indices that require a lot of observation.

I was in Palo Alto having dinner with about 30 people at a really nice Italian place. The guys on each side of me felt it but I didn't. The wine was pretty good... The tiramisu did not appear to be damaged.

Got a phone call from a friend in Turlock. She said it was really felt there.
I am here in Sacramento. At the time of the call, I could see the two chandeliers in the house gently swaying. Although I actually felt nothing.

My experience...the BIIIIG one.
I felt nothing. But I am about 180 miles away.
Different story for the BIG one, October 17, 1989 at 5:17 pm...the 7.2 I really felt that one. I was living in the city, back then, and had just got off work, and was at 7th and Bryant. As the ground roared, and the street undulated and broke up in giant waves you could see the telephone poles swaying violently as the transformers on them blew up in blue flashes and explosions. For about 10 seconds I was certain I would be killed, lurching around in the street trying to keep my balance. Maybe the longest 10 seconds I ever felt. A colleague of mine was a SF Assistant District Attorney. She had stopped off on the way home to buy wine and cheese on Chestnut Street, in the Marina District ("Yuppieville", which was built on dirt fill) When she walked around the corner onto Fillmore Street, it happened right then. She watched in horror as her apartment building (at Northpoint, a block away, straight ahead) crumbled to the ground before her very eyes. Had she not stopped off to buy the wine and cheese, she would probably have been inside, at the time, and maybe perished. She was damned lucky. Others weren't.

I remember the Loma Prietta quake. I was writing my homework on lined paper in my red 3 ring binder. It sounded like the garage door opening.....and then the shaking was unbelevably violent. Ran downstairs and flipped on the TV which immediately went to emergency broadcasting and watched the whole thing unfold.....scary times. I am glad the house was only 3 years old then and held up perfectly other than a few cracks in the drywall.

I remember the big Northridge one, I was 6 years old maybe, staying at my aunt's house. I was sleeping through it till someone woke me up, then we went and sat in her Ford Bronco (what a cool car, a real no nonsense SUV) and felt the aftershocks.
But i didn't feel this SF one and I'm 50 miles away.

Yikes !! As I read of the natural disasters that typically befall certain geographic areas of the country,,, hurricanes, tornados, floods, drought, locusts,,, outside of an occasional high creek, or once in 30 year tornado, we are pretty lucky. I don't think I could handle waiting around for the "big one", or the next hurricane to blow in.
