found some old coins

I was looking through some stuff my dad gave me years ago and I found a pill cannister with coins in it..

I pour them out and.. its a bunch of pennies and some foreign coins but.. what I find is pretty cool

1) penny from 1918
2) penny from 1919
3) an indian head penny.. not perfect
4) steel pennies
5) a blank penny
6) some form of coin made of copper I can make out some form of number.. looks like a 1761...
7) an assortment of wheat pennies..



I think the indian head penny is the most interesting of them all

The ww2 steel pennies are quite valuable....for a penny.

being a cashier I do have time to sort through my change.. I pick out all the wheat pennies and other odds and ends..

Do any of the coins have the letter "S" just below the year?

its an unstruck penny blank...

No S but the 1952 penny has a D

also.. the indian head which is in bad shape is from.. what appears to be 1905

The 1909 S is the one you want. I had one in my youth. Paid $30 for it in 1964 or so, a lot of money then.

I found a 1919 S in regular old change a while back. Could hardly believe it.

What is so special about the San Francisco pennies?

There was an article in the local paper here a few days ago. An older house in town was scheduled to be torn down and the woman (now in her 70's or 80's I think) took a local coin collector who she knew into the house. It seems there was a hole in the wall she remembers putting coins into when she and her sisters were children.
Long story short, after tearing into the wall they got out an estimated $75-$100,000 worth of various coins.

Really the best was years back, guy had been collecting pennies for years, 30, 40 +. Would have his kids, now adults with grown kids of their own, to the bank and have them pickup a roll of coins. He had buckets, garbage cans ... full of coins, mostly pennies.

Contacted his bank, they had to rent a truck, and someone stood at the coin counter for several days counting his $ 70,000 (as I remember) worth of pennies.

Then the "good news", some TV show, I think they had him on, contacted a numistatic (Oh H, a coin dealer). Hearing the story he said he'd have offered them a Quarter Mill, sight unseen.

Except once a bank accepts currency, in most return it to circulation in the normal mode !!!!!

My grandfather had a closet full of old wooden cigar boxes full of wheat pennies, all inventoried by year and mint. He passed away in 1984, and everyone claims they don't know what happened to them. He did it just to pass the time when he retired, I can still see him sorting pennies with a cigar in one hand and a expresso in the other.

My father is a saver. He is an old breed. He started buying bonds EVERY payday. He worked at the same plant for a few months shy of 45 years. He received a substantial retirement, but in addition he had 40+ years worth of bonds accumulated. We went through them serial # by serial# and logged everything when he retired. Some of his $25 and $50 bonds from the early 60's were worth more than their face value.
Total he had more than a substantial amount of $$$$.

He now cashes them in and uses the money for travel expenses. My parental units love to travel.

I know the what you mean, when my dad retired a few years back, they paid him for the sick leave had never used. In 35 years he used five or six sick days at the most, so they paid him a lump sum. The bad part was that the extra income pushed them into a higher tax bracket for that year and they only paid him for half the sick days he had not used. Still, it was a nice bonus and well deserved.

It might buy you one but you couldn't keep it running for long with that sum.
