Tom Perkins' mega sailing yacht on video
I couldn't find the original thread on this boat, you know, the one with the computer controlled masts and sails. 60 Minutes had a story on Perkins and his boat and I came to a more generous assessment of the whole thing (Perkins breathing a sigh of relief). Who knows, this technology might result in highly efficient merchant ships. Stranger things have happened.

I still think its ugly.
He has a good sense of humor! Nothing like making fun of yourself, its always good sport. I don't like how she was going after him becaue of his toys. If you can afford to, why not? Who needs two boats? Women just don't understand men, no guy would ever ask that queston.

I kinda like the guy myself. He damn sure didn't get that loot by being a timid fool.
The article said it was the fastest sailing ship on the sea. Can that be possible?

Well yes and no, with a displacement mono hull, water line length equals speed. So since its the longest it would be the fastest, in theory.
Since there are so few large sailing yachts/ships left, its probably the fastest in theory. Its competition would be like the Eagle, ect. Which would be much slower. However speed and having a seaworthy vessal are usualy two different things. I'm not convenced his Maltese Falcon is the safest blue water boat; seems more like a near shore party boat. Those masts are very tall, and all the technoligy is untested.

I had that thought also, that is, that those tall, unstayed masts could find a world of hurt in 80 mph winds.
Carbon fiber ain't God himself.

Only marginally related to the thread topic, but all you sailors reading this should catch the documentary 'Deep Water' when it shows up at your local art theater. It's an account of Donald Crowhurst's attempts to fake his round the world non=stop voyage in the late 60's in a Piver trimaran also analyzed in the book, "The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst"
Saw it a couple of weeks ago. Tragic story.

Apply enough horsepower to the right hull shape and the HS=sqrt LWL rule goes in the toilet. Sans gaz (ie displacement mode):

Thats what I was thinking. But they used the term "ship" which has not set diffinition.
I'd call the Volvo Ocean 70's, semi displacment. or 420's on crack.

Still have no problem with people spending big bucks or building obnoxious boats though. It may be the fastest largest sailing vessel on the sea, but it is not remotely close to being the fastest sailing vessel on the sea regardless of length. |

One of his claims is that he was the largest single purchaser of carbon fiber in the US.

The fastest monohull is the Illbruck (sp) capable of mid 30's knots and averages 20.
The faster Cata is the Club Med. I do think that he can back up the Carbon Fibre claim as the largest single person purchaser in the world. |
