The President Drove by My House Last Night

My parents have lived in our house since 1993 and not once has the President of the United States driven by.

Before a dinner party last night, I dropped by to say hello to my parents and made it in time before they blocked off the streets.

I'm not a political person, but it was really cool to see the president's car (a Mercedes limo, by the way) drive by (flags and all) with an entourage of secret service and armed police officers.

Anyone ever met George Dub?

I did business in Midland last year with one of the Bushes former neighbors there. Occassionaly, I drive downtown (DC) and go near his house. That's about as close as I've come.

I lived in downtown Toronto back in the late 70's. The Hotel Toronto (?) was just across the street from us and there was some kind of meeting of the Canadian Prime Minister and numerous foreign dignitaries. We joined the crowd to watch the arrival. A whole train of Suburbans with Secret Service agents and three or four limousines sandwiched between them thundered down Queen St. towards the hotel at high speed to avoid any problems. The first Suburban skidded to a stop in front of the hotel, the following Suburban smashed into the back of it followed by every other vehicle in the train smashing into the car in front. The Keystone Cops could have done no better. The Prime Minister and other dignitaries disembarked as if nothing had happened while the drivers surveyed the carnage.

I have met he and his father several times and he doesn't have a Mercedes Limo btw--its a Cadillac. When I was in college, I was lucky enough to get to drive in a Presidential motorcade for the national governer's convention in Charleston, SC. I drove Brent Scowcroft and Rep. Floyd Spence from Airforce One to Kiawah Island. It was one of the neatest experiences of my life.

The USSC had a suburban with a gun turret on top, and they told us that if we drove under the wingspan of AFI, the would open fire, shooting to kill. We got a month of background checks and three days of training. It was cool

Everything is more exciting when you've got a gun aimed at you, eh?

In spring of 1968 I went to see Bobby Kennedy speak at Ball State. After it was over I couldn't get out the back as folks were all moving toward the front. It was like getting caught in a rip tide but all made up of people....suddenly I looked over and there he was working his way through the crowd with Rosy Grier and the other bodyguards.....I just reached out and tossled his hair....people did that to him.....and he was gone.

A few weeks later he was dead.
