Incredible gallery of photos of Iran
http://picasaweb.google.com/aatrvash/Iran02/photo?authkey=WHfBV-cDZ2E#5096647203900199522
I've read that Iran ranks, on some scale or another, 7th in tourist attractions but about 35th in tourist volume. Let's hope catastrophe is averted cause I'd love to visit.

Wow, great photos.
If they would promote tourism, they wouldn't need to sell oil to survive, it appears. It looks to be the cleanest country in that part of the world, perhaps. I wouldn't mind visiting there either, if it were safe, based on the looks of it. Tom W

I was there for a month and a half with my wife, tell you what, never felt safer. Even in countryside and I am not a Muslim. There was no hostility in any form there.

Perception or expectations of what is backward again is relative. What appears as very advanced to some may have no meaning to others. Iran has suffered greatly from the embargo but there is relatively no shortage of food etc. They manage to patch up and drive the old cars. Life goes on.

You will soon have the crowd in here, telling about this terrible infliction of propaganda and how reality is incredibly miserable ... outside the US, ofcourse.

I would also love to go there...
As you may know from my previous posts, I dated a Persian doctor for a while. Ladan told me how beautiful the country and how warm and friendly the people are. She also had similar photographs that she and her family had taken years before. She always missed it as did her daughter who was nine when they came over. She put in me a real longing to go there and see for myself. She also told me that Iran is still a very rich country and is self sufficient in many ways. The grow enough food to take care of themselves and even export it to other ME countries. They have abundant natural resources in addition to oil and they have a very well educated population. They even build their OWN cars (their design, their factories, etc) not many other countries can support an automobile industry that is not just an assembly plant.
I was in training the other week and the instructor was an old Iran hand from back in the '70s. In fact he was one of the guys who got out with his family right before the embassy takeover! Despite that, he still had many great stories about the times he spent there.

I was listening to that huge, bodybuilder guy in the state dept . . . . .oh yeah, Richard Armitage on the tube the other day. He seems pretty reasonable and informed, he was talking about Iran, saying they were about as ethnocentric as any people he'd encountered.
I more or less know what that means but I wiki-ed it just to check and here's what they say: Ethnocentrism is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own culture. It is defined as the viewpoint that “one’s own group is the center of everything,” against which all other groups are judged. Not that I'm knocking them for it, a lot of people are like that, we Americans included to some degree. I've read about some of the horrors of Iranian fanaticism -- some of what went down with the Shah and his secret police and then similar stuff from the goon squads supporting Khomeini, post '89, and it's not pleasant. Nonetheless, I have to admit that I would probably have a serious sense of wounded pride if I had been an Iranian born in say, 1930. OOPS! I just tried the link in the OP and it doesn't work any more. Damn.

Yep, 404 not found. Too bad, I'd like to see them. Any from Shiraz? I lived there for 6 months back in 1979. They weren't so friendly towards Westerners back then. I meant lots of the folks that were very friendly. Many were not, but I didn't meet them, just saw them out and about. I was really weirded out at school by the hero worship of Hitler and the Third Reich though. I'd been brought up to believe he was a mass murderer and a megolomaniac (I think history proves this). Most my classmates who were Iranian felt Hitler was a hero and it was unfortunate that Germany lost. I hadn't come across that yet in my life until then.
Anyway, I hope the nutcases in charge of Iran are soon done away with. The people there are remarkable and I feel would make a fine government if allowed to do so democratically.

I can't speak for the country, I have never been there, but I have worked with Iranians, my neighbors were/are Iranians in Canada. I think they are one of the most conniving, dishonest, selfish, deceitful people. You can never trust what they tell you, they will lie just for the fun of it.
Just like the arabs, you trust them on your own peril. Your mileage may vary. Yes, I did paint with a rather large brush, speaking from personal and friends' experience. Alex |
