We have a neighbor with a loud-@$$ bike who leaves around 5:30 every morning. It's worse now that it's getting colder because he idles the bike longer before taking off. That bike idles louder than our 'burb Diesel at throttle. Not to mention the racket as he pulls away.

Is it worth pursuing this or should we bear it until one of us leaves? I get the sense motorcycles are exempt from noise ordinances. I'll probably have better luck having the neighbors to keep their cats out of our planter boxes.

Are California cycles barred from exhaust mods? If not, do aftermarket motorcycle exhaust systems have to be CARB-certified? Why not just buy a woodchipper and prune a couple dozen oak trees at about 3:30 AM? Maybe he'll get the hint.

Motorcycles are NOT exempt from noise laws. Usually it is one of those things that cops let slide. Unless you are being a complete idiot almost all cops will look the other way. I don't think I would take the man route and try to talk to him in person. This may cause unwanted retribution in your direction.

A lot of cops ride bikes with loud pipes and tend to ignore the lawbreakers. Straight pipes are an abomination and an affront to the general population. Don't tell me how loud pipes save lives either. The noise comes out the back, not the front.

Sounds like another case of "loud exhaust, small member" syndrome.

I have a couple of neighbors like that.

They probably cost more lives because they are a major distraction. It can also permanently damage someones hearing if they are driving with the window(s) down next to one.

Don't jump all over louder (non-stock) pipes as a whole. It is the individual that is the jack ass. He has the discretion. Ever hear of a loud handle? It is not loud unless he twists the wrist.

Know that feeling. There was an idiot with loud pipes living on our block this summer. Used to leave for work around 5am. Our block has a stop sign at either end but he'd still crank the throttle and make it roar at 5am even though he'd have to brake hard at the stop sign. He's moved and I'm happier.

Don't hang out next to a motorcycle, and that problem is solved. In addition, avoid hanging out next to another car; they can be unpredictable.

Kind of hard to do that when you are stopped at a light and a bike roars by at full throttle when his turn lane goes green.

Problem solved when they put a muffler on it.

Turbo vehicles I can accept without a muffler because the turbo does a major portion of the silencing. Non-turbo vehicles NEED a muffler!

IF that were true, they would point them FORWARD.

My RC45 came with a carbon fiber HRC race exhaust, its not loud at all compared to the aftermarket stuff they put on their bikes. Those are just noise makers, they don't realize, non turbo engines need the back pressure to scavenge. They would rather live with loud noise than low end.

Speaking from the loud pipes biker side I would suggest walking over there one day and talking to him about it. See if he can keep it throttled down until he gets out of the neighborhood. Be civil about it and he will probably be civil in return.
If this does not work then call the law and complain. From what I have read Calif does have some noise ordinance laws in effect.
By the way I like the way mine sound and I do try to keep it down when I leave the house at 5:30 am.
