It is a miracle that it's become so much better in only 18 years - a testiment to the massive economic engine that the West Germans were able to create after the war.

The wounds inflicted on society by the stasi, and communism in general will take some time to heal. The Germans are among the most resourceful people on the planet - just spend some time there and ponder what happened in the twentieth century and look at her now!
The Russians sucked most of their satellite countries dry in the name of war reparations, not to mention the 10s of thousands (or more, depending on country size) of soldiers and hundreds of army barracks per country that were all financed by the host nations for five decades.

I remember when the Brandenberg gate was a symbol of the divided Germany. To see it now it is quite beautiful and seeing it as just a tourist attraction for its beauty is very enlightening and pleasant.

Thanks for sharing your photos of a disturbing past.

I am glad that period is over.

I remember when I was twlve (1961 or so) thinking that nuclear war with Russia was inevitable.

forgotten towns of East Germany

While communism was bleak, and so horrible that many East Germans risked life and limb to get out, it is my belief that many of the small villages in Saxony, such as Markneukirchen, and little towns like that, escaped relatively unharmed from bombing, in the war, and their architecture and inhabitants survived the war and the bleak occupation years and many things there haven't changed too much from how they were before the war.

Their existance and culture dates back many hundreds of years.

I get to talk to alot of German Immigrants who moved to the states after the war and some even more recently.

The culture shock is very apparent, and I hear alot of stories from people who are very happy to finally be successful in a field of their choice, with the choices being limitless without having to have their passions or skills stifled by a socialist infrastructure.

I understand in the old days, the burgermeister decided what work you would do and even who you would marry. If your father was a wood chopper you would be. STreet sweeper, etc.

No wonder folks immigrated here for economic opportunity.

Dreamtime

Aboriginals believe in two forms of time. Two parallel streams of activity. One is the daily objective activity ... The other is an infinite spiritual cycle called the "dreamtime," more real than reality itself. Whatever happens in the dreamtime establishes the values, symbols, and laws of Aboriginal society. Some people of unusual spiritual powers have contact with the dreamtime.
