That's cool... I saw this on "Modern Marvels" last night too. The US could be totally powered by about 600+ of these towers. The Aussies are also working on a solar "wind" tower that heats air on the ground and directs it up a 2500' tall tunnel with the draft powering turbines at the base. The area covered by the collector is about 3 miles across...

This morning I saw a windmill farm that was in the ocean somewhere. Don't remember where it was or where I saw it, but I was wondering how well those windmills would hold up in hurricanes. Can you imagine the KWs those would produce during a cat. 4-5 hurricane?

The props change pitch to keep them running a fairly constant speed. In a light wind, they take a big bite of wind for maximum speed. In a heavy wind they take a small bite.

Last year when I was driving to Wyoming I saw quite a few windmills in southern Minnesota and Iwoa (iirc). It seems as if one in ten or twenty is broken down. I can only imagine the staggering cost of repair on those huge things!

PBS had a NOVA special or something on solar engery. It mainly centered on Germany. They give special rates for people who have solar panels. They can sell their exses electricity for twice the going rate. Germany is suppose to be the leader in production of solar panels. There is/was a solar steam generator in Nevada that produced electricity for California. It heated a synthetic oil/liquid. That heated water to steam to turn a turbine to generate electricity. There was also a Supermarket on the east coast that rented solar panel from a company to light and heat/cool the store. The economics were long term payoff for both the store and the renting company.

I recently talked to a lady who is a commercial architect. She is currently working on a shopping center that has active solar power integrated into its heating, cooling, and lighting. She says more such projects are coming along all the time.
