Back in the Roman days, they were called Barbarians as they differed from the Romans' sophisticated appearance during the slaughter festivals. The categorization hasn't changed, only the lettering in the verbiage.

When I went to the PI in '02, they briefed us on all the different bad guys we might run into. This was also not too long after American Pie had introduced us all to the other meaning of MILF. Apparently, the Gunny giving the brief hadn't seen that movie, since he looked puzzled when we all laughed at the acronym.
