Wasn't a Lightning found frozen in Greenland a few years ago?

Very cool, hard to imagin much is left after 65 years in salt water.

Great story.

I built a P-38 model airplane as a 6th grader, and hung it from my bedroom ceiling with fishing line.

I stared at it every night while going to sleep.

That is pretty cool. Twin turbo airplane.

I presume the cold ocean in Wales is what kept it from oxidizing and or dryrotting like the Viking ships.

Yes, the article makes reference to it about 11 paragraphs in; interesting story, you should read it.;)

That's interesting.

I wonder if being buried in the sand helped keep it from disintegrating as well.

I imagine it is pretty fragile and will fall apart if they try to lift it out. I bet they will have to dig all around it and support all parts of the airframe so it won't fall apart.

Very, very romantic. I hope there are no human remains in it.

The pilot escaped according to the article, only to be lost some months later in Tunisia.
From what I read the locals have allowed it to be covered by the sand once more. Perhaps they have no desire to exhume it. Can't be much left after 60+ years in salt water.

Notice they said it was the Irish Sea--50% alcohol.

LOL, (for those who like the show) the Family Guy episode where Peter and Brian fly Aer Lingus to Ireland and the plane lands at the airport in a sea of beer bottles. :D

I think it was 3 to4 lightnings and some B-17s or B-24s. They were buired about 100ft beneathe ice. They drilled or doug a hole down and created a cavrn. Dissassembled the P-38 and brought them up in pieces. I think one was restored in KY and is flying now.

Yep and the same salvage company managed to get it out. There was a special about it on cable a few weeks ago.
