Ceiling Fan Advice
We will be replacing ours with contemporary models.
My wife picked Minka Aire, probably because we never heard of them before, nobody carries them, and they're expensive. Anybody heard of this company, or have other suggestions? http://www.minkagroup.net/productimage.asp?productid=8799&div=167&styleid=195&catid=2219&colid= |

Too fancy and deco for my tastes. For the record, we have always spent some bucks on ceiling fans and buy Hudson Bays; they last forever and they run quietly.

I saw the topic "Ceiling fan" and was going to reply "Minka" IMO you can't go wrong you may have to do more balancing than with Casablanca but they have zero motor noise and are an excellent value.
In my new house I have Casablanca but that is because my light switch system plays nice with Casablanca fans. |

I have a Hampton Bay in the guest room, and it vibrates, wobbles, damn near shakes. (insures the guests don't stay long ). In the bedroom, I have a Hunter - quiet, no shaking.
The Lanai, has a Hampton Bay outdoors model (plastic blades, switches have rubber booties), quiet, barely any wobble. Never heard of Minka. - those Gyro's look interesting!

You get what you pay for! If you buy a $60 hampton bay from Home Depot dont be surprised if it starts to wobble and the motor is noisy. OTOH, if you buy a $200 Hampton Bay it will be much better.

I do not remember the brand, but two years ago I installed one that was installed different from the others that I have installed. This one just required a simple junction box for the wiring, but mounting it required it to be attached to a ceiling joist with a very heavy bracket. But then this fan without the blades attached (fan only, no light fixture) was close to 25 pounds.

We have 5 in the house, and I couldn't begin to tell you what make they are. One of them is a piece of crap for sure. When I go home tonight I'm gonna have a look.

I've got a $60 Harbor Breeze fan up in my bedroom, and it works just fine, very quiet on the low setting. Next fan I get will be something better, I like some of the Monte Carlo's, they seem to have some good motors in them, and have interesting Architectual detailing.
