C'mon guys--its an 870! What Med said. Unless you are going to shoot 3 1/2 BBBs (which it sounds like you have the express not the magnum), shoot it first before you spend $65 (Limbsaver is the best one, imo, btw) on a recoil pad for a $300 shotgun. I don't think you will notice much if any difference going to 3". Glad you are into it now you will go when Med comes in Jan.

The important question is are you going to get an Olt coyote call from the '50s off ebay and learn how to call specks with it? THAT would be impressive

Also, knowing where and how you are hunting, if you are using 3" you may want to buy at least one box of Hevi Shot BBs. I don't buy it for ducks but hunting specks over rice the extra range cuts down on cripples.
I used to have a Olt crow call. Crows sure found it an insult to have me disrespectin' their neighborhood with that noisy thing. A dog chewed it up (yes, my dog ate my homework).

I'd not heard of Hevi shot until your mention. It sure is expensive. I wonder how they get a nickle-tungsten alloy to weigh more than lead. What is that secret ingredient, depleted uranium?

Ask your guy about the coyote call, or ask him to ask an old cajun about it--the best callers I know use them and they sound more like a speck, than a well, speck It is ooooold school. The wind it takes to call specks with one is almost unfathomable.

Hevi should be about.....$25/box. I keep some of it for when I take say my dad on his one hunt for the year--like I said it cuts down on cripples. Some of the guys down dere use the Hevi TURKEY shot out of their Ithaca 10s for specks. That is approaching $5/shot Just get one box of BBs and load every other shot with it for knock downs--I promise it will lower your frustration level a little during your re-introduction period

There is nothing wrong with a Remington 870. A friend of mine used to shoot AAA trap with one. It certainly raised eyebrows with his competitors, who usually favored a much more expensive shotgun. The only modification he made was to add the aforementioned butt pad - mostly so the gun would always rest at the exact same spot on his shoulder.

I don't know I have never shot one, but my friend went duck hunting and one of the guys he went with had a semi auto Beretta. He said they would start shooting he would pop off a round or two and start swearing, guess it was jamming all the time.

I just recently read an article in (Field & Stream? Outdoor Life?) in which the 870 was selected as one of the 50 best shotguns ever made. When you consider it's mass manufactured modesty is in the same category as Purdy's, that's an extraordinary accomplishment.

This morning I went goose hunting with some friends. I missed the first shot (want my list of excuses?) and f-'d up the second because I grew up with a Winchester 1400 (autoloader) and a Stevens double. In the intensity of the moment I sort of forgot I was shooting a pump gun and when that 2nd shot didn't magically prepare itself I pulled the trigger a couple of times before I remembered to work the slide. By then the speck was about 75 yards away. Oh well.

The kick wasn't too bad. In fact, I was quite surprised that it wasn't notably more recoil than my autoloader. I wont need any additional recoil padding. Also, the gun came naturally to my shoulder and swung easily. I'm pretty confident that I'll get used to the slide action eventually. Hopefully I'll report a bunch of geese in affirmation!

The longer shells are not that impressive. The limiting factor is still the pressure in the barrel. Longer shells won't let you cheat laws of nature.

I used to hear the same thing about Benelli when they were rare, the same story has changed to Beretta. Amongst the people I know personally that use the Extrema including myself there has not been a single jam
