Finally Made It to Our New Cabela's Strore Grand Opening

in East Hartford, Ct. What a freaking place! I was like a kid in a candystore, with no money . I had a few hours free last night and we were down a kid thanks to a sleepover so the Mrs., the boys and I headed over to check it out. It actually opened on the 9th but the Grand Opening Celebration goes through Sunday.

At 185K sq.ft. it's on the larger end of the Cabela's stores (PA is 250K, DFW, TX is 230K, MI is 225K) and they've got everything hunting, fishing, camping, boating, tailgating related under one roof. Throw the massive taxidermy display, native critter display, native gamefish display, gun library and restaurant into the mix and you could easily kill a few hours.

Some of you have probably already been to one, but if there's one opening within an hour or so of you I'd highly recommend it if you're into outdoor sports! I'm as psyched about their marine section as anything else since I had to drive to Waterford (45 minutes away) for all of my boating stuff.

The Mrs. got a kick out of the signs on the front doors asking that all patrons check their firearms at the security desk for their shopping pleasure.

Between this store opening and the LL Bean opening in Manchester, CT I can wander around some of my favorite stores instead of just clicking through their site. If only there were an Orvis Flagship Store or Bass Pro Shops (although they are opening one up right next to the Patriots stadium in Foxborough, MA) in the works.

I ran into 3 landscaping customers from different towns, who all got jobs there part-time. Each one agrees that even after their employee discount it will end up costing them money to work there.

Those places remind me of Gander Mtn. and Bass Pro Shops. They have all the good stuff but you pay out the nose for it. I don't know how our Gander Mtn is surviving, they are so freakin' expensive.

I don't disagree vw, I'm as frugal as...well...a swamp yankee. But with a lot of stuff I'd rather pay a little more and have it for 5-10 years than buy cheaper and replace it withing a few years. You can buy anything cheaper. At least intially.

Yeah, reminds me of the piece of crap, (fully assembled) sliding compound miter saw I bought from Northern Tool and equipment under cognitive speculation of my inner reasoning.
I plugged it in and found the geometry was so out of sink that it almost cut itself inhalf due to poor design and assembly from the manufacturer.

Long story, but I took it back right away and they said it was the first one they had returned.
I said, "Yeah right, wait till after Christmas, I' knew I should have spent some money on a dewalt."

They opened a Cabela's in my hometown of Wheeling, WV. Projected 4 million people a year would visit, most from out of town. That's 10,958 people per day 365 days a year. The store's been open about three years and management says they are exceeding expectations. To accomodate the traffic, the state even added an exit to I-70 complete with a huge overpass. Un-frigging-believable.

This store has spawned another Generica in what was otherwise a dwindling economy. Now they have added Wal-mart, Target and about 50 other stores and restaurants in the Cabela's mall.

I agree it's a cool place to kill a few hours. If you look closely, you can find some bargains. And my opinion is the quality is generally very good.

Cabela's in Michigan is the second most visited place in the state, second to the Mackinaw Bridge.

Its location started out as corn fields and a single stop light, there are several hotels a waterpark and more stores than you can count.

I want to one in PA, they spawn whole towns. All you see is farm land, then all of a sudden a Cabela's and a few dozen other stores supporting it.

I'm heading up that way this Friday to pick up a wheel for the VW, so maybe I'll check it out.

Forgot to mention there's a $200 MILLION partially enclosed year around water park planned for the WV site. It's in the permitting stage right now. That's a big waterpark.

Love those places... the Scheels (same idea as Cabelas, essentially) in Fargo, ND has a full-sized ferris wheel in the middle. Good food, too!

A new one will open in Lacy, WA very soon. I will wait to visit until next year, after the silly season.
