Mr Whipple is gone . . .

I was saddened today to hear that another popular icon of American culture has died. Mr. Whipple of Charmin bathroom tissue fame has passed on into that great supermarket in the sky.

I don't know if he qualifies as a "popular icon". I don't care for any commercials, and his were quite annoying.

My tongue was firmly implanted in my cheek when I wrote that, POS

Thank God. You scare me sometimes, Dee8go.

Sometimes I scare myself . . . :D

Mr Whipple? You didn't look older than me at the GTG - maybe you just hide it well :D:D:D

Actually, I'm ninety-seven this year. I eat right, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep . . .

Damn Charmin

Oh, I recall him, though I had to search to find the actor's name. Dick Wilson was 91.

I remember him better in his recurring role as the hotel bar lush that Darrin was always running into on "Bewitched." Whenever Darrin had a fight with Samantha, it seemed, he'd head off to this bar (in the pilot it was in the hotel where he and Samantha were honeymooning), and more often than not it was Dick Wilson's drunk he ended up trading lines with. (But see below --)

Wikipedia has this:

Dick Wilson (born Riccardo DiGuglielmo; July 30, 1916 – November 19, 2007), was a British-born American character actor who played the role of finicky grocery store manager Mr. (George) Whipple in over 500 Charmin toilet paper television commercials (1965–1989, 1999). In appreciation for his performance of the recognizable character, Procter & Gamble famously provided Wilson with a free lifetime supply of Charmin.

Hmmm . . . neither Wikipedia nor IMdB mentions his turns as the hotel bar drunk. Either he was uncredited, their filmography is incomplete, or I'm remembering it wrong. Anybody recall?
