Those Aren't Pillows!

Yes, "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" the best Thanksgiving movie ever! :D

Add that to your family celebration and also the 40th anniversary of "Alice's Restaurant"

Definitely up there.

"Alice's Restaurant" is a seriously-dated, unfunny, piece of trash. I wish it would simply disappear from American existence; like "Make love, not war" and other feel-good crap like that.

I liked it just fine, when I heard it for the first time almost 40 years ago! But then, I can say the same thing for classics like Monster Mash and dogs barking to Christmas Carols.

Obvious generation gap

Well, there's no argument that the movie version of "AR" was pure exploitation, but the original recording, all 18 minutes, 20 seconds is still a classic from Arlo's 1967 debut album.

^^^ I still enjoy listening to the original. The movie was pretty lame IMO.

I'm not to thrilled with A's R either. The throngs of people that donate food to the local radio station for the privilege of requesting it to be played just defy belief... If they want to hear a long song on the radio, they could request 2112 and that would be OK with me! :D

Whoa, whoa, easy there big fellow.

Dated, I'll grant you but my country expected me and a bunch of others to jump off a cliff and go over to try to slaughter a bunch of people who meant me no harm.

Guthrie was dead on on that one.

Yea... nothin' like the "feel-like-$hit" crap of today.

I grew up watching the network "Specials" during any holiday. Therefore, I always have to see "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving". As a kid this would be the time of year when I would start looking forward to the Rankin-Bass specials.:D

Just a reminder that it's just not the holidays without Steve Martin, John Candy and yes . . . I did spend $1.99 at the iTunes store to download the live version 40th anniversary edition of "Alice's Restaurant" ;)

NPR's Nov. 26 2005 Feature on AR

The reason that Alice's restaurant was such a big hit was that it was anti vietnam war at a time when it was somewhat courageous to be so.

And it was done in a way that made you laugh.

The movie was kindof lame, I remember thinking so as I watched it even though the glow of anti vietnamness made me enjoy it all the same.

I am tempted to rent it and watch it again to see how I think of it now.

About fifteen years ago when my kids were teens I tried to get them to watch the movie "Woodstock" with me, thinking they might benefit from this pillar of cultural excellence. They stuck it out maybe 'bout five minutes or so and I had to watch it by my lonesome as even the lovely Mrs. wouldn't watch it with me!:P

MTI 11-24-2008 08:47 PM

As I stated before, I could never recommend the movie, since the "theatre of the mind' effect of the song is so much more powerful.

As for "Woodstock" . . . that movie was way too long when it first came out in theatres anyway . . . at least with the DVD version you can switch chapters easily. ;)

I proudly sit on the group "W" bench! and for the record, my 17 YO evil genius loves the record too.

The famous gap in Nixon's tapes was supposed to have been 18 minutes, 20 seconds or so, and one of Carter's sons told Guthrie that they found a copy of his AR album in the White House library, I forget how they knew but they had some inkling that it was from Nixon's days.
