Not so new. Identical to the tailgate on my 74 Olds Custom Cruiser.

Didn't the Kaiser Darrin have doors that slid into the front fenders?

Must have confounded a lot of valets :)

Don't know if it was a Kaiser Darrin but saw a car with doors that disappeared into the fenders at the Great American Race last year. Really cool.

Yes it was.

Linky no worky.

iirc, can't think of a production car with such doors.

The Graham Cavalier must have been ahead of its time to have forward hinged doors in 1936/7.

Don't minivans do that?

Matt L 12-01-2007 09:05 PM

Not any that I've seen. They do open parallel to the body, but on the outside.

Kuan 12-01-2007 09:18 PM

A Gullwing would accomplish the same thing, just can't park it too close to another car.

Think Britney could have used a dissappearing car door?

You have to admit, it is pretty slick looking.

Are they out of Detroit? I noticed the Fox theatre in the beginning.

A dissappearing act would be much better for her.

Don't gullwings take less space to open then a standard coupe door? I don't have the specs handy but that was the case on the DMC.

I think so, iirc. When in high school, a friend's Dad owned one. We took it out Friday nights on the cruise strip. Overheated a few times.

Didn't BMW make a roadster back in the 80's that had doors that slid down into their sills?

KarTek 12-03-2007 09:57 AM

When this style tailgates came out in the mid '70's I thought they were the coolest thing ever. These new doors they show are quite slick too I think. They seem to be well engineered and would be exceptionally beneficial to beaver hunters everywhere!

I know someone in Germany who has one. I sat in it. It was black. It was really nice.

The DMC-12's doors take about 14" of space to open. If you can fit between the car and whatever you're parked next to, you should be able to open the doors.

Got pics..!? I love those wagons. I had a 74 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon about ten years ago. I made the moronic mistake of selling it to some guy down the street from me who didn't get a year out of it before he destroyed it driving drunk...I miss that car.:(

Mistress 12-05-2007 02:25 PM

I'd hate to see that thing get stuck in rain storm.

Dee8go 12-05-2007 02:34 PM

Hey, that looks pretty cool. It doesn't look like there's enoungh room under the car to accommodate the thicknes of the doors.
