Our "new" winter beater

For those days when the Miata on snow tires just won't carry enough people or stuff.

Under $3k, 4matic, everything works. Not the color we were hoping for, but hey - the price and condition were right.

Now we just need to figure out her name.....

Nice car man!

Gotta love those wagons.

Good deal, hope she serves you well this winter!

147k.

Got a pile of service records ~ 2" thick. Mostly uninteresting stuff, except that her head gasket (and most undercarriage wear out items - CV boots, tie rods, etc) was replaced about 20k miles/4 years ago. Got original owners manuals, too. Appears to be a one family-three owner car best we can deduce.

Radio is asking for a code, so I guess we'll be calling a dealer to get that?

A buddy here has a Euro wagon with a 5-speed and a 4 cylinder engine. It needs an engine. I want it but it is not going to happen.

This AM I threw on a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 245/45/18's for the 600, officially the winter car after that bill.

Now it's actually quite capable in the slippery stuff.

"he shoots, he scores!!"

Her name is "Sandy" what else could you call her with that color?

That is a sweet wagon. I am jealous!

Medmech 12-09-2007 08:52 AM

Nice Score, for some reason I can't find those deals.

How is the interior?

Jim B. 12-09-2007 10:18 AM

The early 4Matics like on this car were a horror, and said to be best avoided on cars like these W124 wagons, which was the first time this feature showed up on the on Mercedes.

I hope you got a good one, but the 4matic feature on the W124 may have been the reason the car went so cheap. With luck you might not have any 4matic problems - I hope so.

Everything else about them was very good, except for the other typical things W124 owners needed to watch out for, such as the head gasket leak, wiring harness, etc.

Hatterasguy 12-09-2007 01:35 PM

So what he got it so cheap, just disconnet the front drive if it goes bad.

Interior is comparable to the exterior in condition - i.e. damn good. All surfaces clean and intact, all four floor mats in place and nearly new looking, no cracks, rips, tears, or stains save a couple muddy boot looking scuffs in the way back. Only "defect" is that she's only got two out of the three middle seat head rests.

Went in with our eyes open - have heard the horror stories, and also some (albeit less common) love stories. So far, so good - granted, so far is only ~300 miles. Going to start her off with a complete fluid change to set a baseline ( for friends with lifts in heated garages!) and see how we do. Figure at the price we paid, even if we need to drop in a re-man'd transfer case we're still sitting on a good deal.
