Good new: although Chuck Norris isn't running for president . . .

. . . . his huckleberry hound buddy Huckabee is and they both have a plan to teach Christianity in public schools.

Oh boy. Theocracy can't be too far around the corner.

And all this talk about Huckabee's sense of humor. I heard a clip of him saying "Congess has been spending money like John Edwards at a beauty shop." Hoo-EEE! Good one Mike! Of course, Huck doesn't have anyone getting him to look his best (some chore) for his every public appearance. And nevermind the fact that Edwards can think cirlces around him.

And then there was his line about putting Hillary Clinton on the first flight to Mars. Oh Mike, stop, you're killing me!!!

All this consternation about Romney's Mormonism and barely a peep about Huckabee's Suth'n Baptist-ness??

A good letter in the SFChron about that:

Editor:

I am confused. Mitt Romney gets nervous because his poll numbers are dropping. He makes a speech to allay fears voters have about his Mormon religion, and how it might affect his presidency.

Meanwhile, no one seems at all concerned that the guy who passed him, Mike Huckabee, is informed by his faith that the world is only 6,000 years old. Maybe all of this would make more sense if I lived in Iowa.

JOHN BENNETT San Francisco

About the only thing to like about him is the very likely fact that his routine will fall flat in prime time, but then I thought Dubya's would also.

Both those guys give me the willies.

Mitt was interviewed by Eric Seagal on NPR the other day. Eric asked him what he thought about the Genisis story in the Bible. Mitt kindof sneeringly replied that he couldn't BELIEVE that NPR would ask a question about the bible...Eric patiently said that it seemed to be relevant to teaching it in schools....Mitt just went on and on ridiculing him for asking....

Never did answer the question, of course.

Mitt gave me the impression of being arrogant and humorless.

I don't mind a guy not answering a question.....politely.

Ross P did it well. ONce as he was leaving a press conference one of the reporters asked him a question, one of those tricky ones....he said..."I knew you were going to ask me that....and you knew I wasn't going to answer it....Heh heh."

I like Romney a tiny bit more than Huckabee, and that's not much.

He's got that Mormon 'cotton candy flavored niceness' that I choked on in my youth.

Strange energy IMO.

I would be okay with public schools teaching elective classes about religion (including Christianity) rather than teaching religion. I have read some horror stories (in one or another of Ann Coulter's books) about public school kids being indoctrinated into non-Christian religions without the knowledge or consent of the parents.

As for the candidates, the only Republican I like is Ron Paul, and I don't like any of the Democrats.

I'd rather they leave any and all religion out of public schools. If you want your child to learn about God, allah, Yahweh, Buddha, etc, etc, do it on your own time.

Unfortunately for me, I hate Hillary. However, my favorite porn star, Jenna Jameson, as reported in Playboy (Jennifer Marie Massoli) is supporting her so if all the candidates are equal, that is where my vote goes.

How would you do what you say? What if I got offended because you didn't cover Buddha and his teachings? What about Siva? What about Zeus and Apollo? Much easier to leave religion at the door instead of having to tip toe around it all. After all, WTF good is this religion anyways? Besides giving us one more thing to fight over, that is. Look at your two paragraphs and see if you can manage to bring in all the gods and goddesses.

It would never be perfect. There seems to be general widespread ignorance of other cultures, religions -- here and elsewhere -- so an expanded understanding of what some people get so bent out of shape over that they are willing to blow themselves and others up might be useful.

BTW, I sorta like Chuck Norris, all in all. I don't groove with some or perhaps much of his world view but I have to admit, simplistic as it is, on the rare occasions I watch his show (don't ask me why), I am sort of looking forward to him laying the bad guys/punks out on their collective a$$es.

Not to mention, he'd be a great guy to have your back in a scrape.

Our kids are mediocre in scholastic performance. They haven't even mastered the "must have"s and we are talking about the "useful"s?

All of them? Some certainly have mastered the "must haves," and better than most of us. Teaching to the lowest-common-denominator is a waste of talent.

Not all of them I don't think. We have a few bright ones. However, so far, in the math and science test worldwide, we don't seem to have done well. Just middle of the road. Unfortunately, we do need the math and science skills since we are being edged out of manufacturing. Manufacturing WAS our bag. Not anymore. Therefore, we are going to need those skills.

Unfortunately for you and I, if we tried to tell that to people, they would disagree since they might have a child that falls under that category.
