Thumbs up 2009 Honda Accord Diesel and New Honda Hybrids for 2009 - Car News

http://www.caranddriver.com/carnews/14269/2009-honda-accord-diesel-and-new-honda-hybrids-for-2009.html

One interesting tidbit is the cast stainless-steel exhaust manifold, but the most compelling story here is the NOx converter. There are two substrate layers on the converter’s honeycomb matrix: an outer layer that stores NOx and a lower layer of platinum particles that, although it also stores a little NOx, mostly reacts with the exhaust to produce ammonia during rich combustion. The ammonia, which is described by the formula NH3, reacts with the stored NOx to produce nitrogen and water. The process is choreographed by the ECU.

Honda claims its system was developed in-house and that, unlike VW’s similar NOx trap that will be for sale soon, Honda’s is scalable to larger vehicles. In other words, Honda says it believes it can put a V-6 diesel in a Pilot or similarly sized vehicle that meets 50-state emissions without having to inject urea, as will be the case with the VW Touareg diesel. Three different engineers repeated these claims; that gives us the feeling that such a vehicle is in the works.

Thats good. I've always viewed urea injection as a huge negative point to any vehicle equipped with it.

UI is a chicken ***** way to meet emissions standards, there shouldn't be a need for it. All it does is show that the manufacturer can't make an engine that is naturally "clean".

Plus urea is not a convenient idea. I like the fact that the Honda tech can be transferred to their bigger engines as well. A V6 or V8 diesel from Honda based on this tech would be awesome. Looks like with BMW and Honda entering the diesel arena, diesel is back and with a resounding bang or should I say clatter.

Good good. I wish my Accord were a diesel, it isn't much of a revver as it is anyways (doesnt even have the vtec since I have a base model) I'd rather have the extra torque.

Diesels make more sense for how most Americans lazily drive anywho.

The new 2.4L engine in the 2008 Accord has around 180bhp, the diesel is way more exciting as it has gobs of torque down low end and promises 52mpg economy figure as well.

I've been holding out hope for a diesel Odyssey for a while now. I know it has been discussed at length on the Ody Club forum and has been rumored for 5 or 6 years. MAYBE, it will finally come to fruition.

I'm completely naive when it comes to the non-U.S. market, what kind of history does Honda have with diesel engines? Are they common in other countries? If this is their first foray into diesels I'm not sure I want to buy the first one off the lot.

VW's system sure seems like patchwork, you'd think they could develop a better converter rather than just injecting urea.

Got some rave reviews in UK as well as good sales figure.

On the other hand, the liquid urea injection system could be combined with optional equipment for extra long trips without stopping.....particularly in Texas where the extra long trip has developed into an art form.

Move over Johnny Jug, there's a new kid in town! Water and urea injection in one.

Try to design a good plumbing for women in that case. NASA had to do it and it was a mighty challenge for them.

The 150 hp that C/D is speculating is more than an adequate amount of power for a car this size, even from a gas engine. Add in the tons of torque from the diesel, and this car will fly (268 lb/ft!?!). The 4 cylinder Accord didn't exceed 150 hp until the 2003 redesign. My first Accord, a 1988 EXi coupe, had the "high powered" engine with a whopping 120 hp. The next one, a 1990 EX sedan, had 135 hp. Both of these cars had good amounts of power for anything you needed the car to do.

With diesel going clean, quiet, and smoke-free I think there's going to be a lot of people keeping it in mind for their next car. The only question becomes availability of diesel if you aren't close to a metropolitan area or a major highway. Does anyone have difficulty getting diesel where they live?

If the number of diesel ownership go up, I am sure the gas companies will see sense in opening up more pumps in interest of business.
