If you're looking for a Camry sized car that gets good mpg, the Prius isn't really a bad choice, to be honest... if you are looking for an econobox that gets good mpg, I wuoldnt want to deal with the hybrid crap. If you need the Prius to lug stuff around (its fairly useful at that, big and tall interior) go for it.
I'd much rather have a diesel.

Long on macho testosterone. Short on substantive comparisons.

I wish I could have shot up a hybrid with a .50 hand gun and a machine gun... I would have opted for a gattling though |

With all of the batteries I would think that a hybrid would be good for having your mobile jump starting business.

He already did a more detailed comparison of it.
In that one Clarkson said he took the Prius for a day on his normal commute and averaged 45mpg. He did the same thing with a diesel VW Polo and got 70mpg.

Agreed. BTW, this video is nothing new. I think I saw it more than a year ago. It's pretty useless as far as objective information goes, though it is slightly entertaining. Hybrids and diesels have their own pluses and minuses. Ultimately they serve the same purpose which is reduced fuel consumption.

I just don't like when they try to sway people with inaccuracies. I remember they threw a hissy fit because the new Shelby GT500 made 450 HP instead of 500... well dur, it makes 500 (if not more) at the flywheel. I wouldn't be surprised if Clarkson got more than 45 mpg and less than 70 mpg on his VW just to make his point that he doesn't like hybrids.

You make a valid point, but he is dead on with the real world mileage. just take a look at fueleconomy.gov http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm My jetta TDI automatic did 45mpg on I-5 averaging 85-90mph to LA. Id average 50mpg on my daily drive to work, I highly doubt a hybrid prius would have similar mileage numbers in the same driving conditions.

The priuses can get over 45 mpg easily but you have to drive them carefully, if you drive them around like a normal car the gas engine gets used a lot. They are great city cars and can haul a lot of stuff and are pretty peppy thanks to all the torque from the electric motor.
Toyota could have made them a lot smaller and more fuel efficient but I think they are really an alternative to a Camry for most people, not a Corolla. I for sure wouldn't want one in the long run though! Those EPA ratings for my 2000 Accord are bogus. That site says 19 mpg city! For a 2.3 liter Honda! I'd have to be running full throttle stop light to stop light to get 19. I drive it pretty hard and have yet to get lower than 23.

Now are you talking about the new EPA ratings or those on the window sticker? As you may know EPA recently revised the mileage ratings. From what I've seen the hybrid mileage ratings are now pretty accurate, but it seems that most other cars are now underrated. My TDI for example is now rated 32 city / 42 highway. Well, 42 is what I get in mixed, normal driving. To get 32 in the city I'd probably have to spend 90% of my driving in stop-n-go traffic.
One advantage the hybrids have compared to older diesels is significantly cleaner exhaust, but this is somewhat mitigated by the pollution resulting from producing the batteries and the diesel's ability to run on biodiesel.
