Nice to see those!!!!!
Models of the ME 109 up through the "d" (Dora) had Jumo engines. After that, the "e" (Emil) models had the first Mercedes Benz motors (DB601) The ME109 had the largest production numbers of any German fighter in the war. Over 30,000 of them, and they were built to the very end of the war, in May 1945

The Bf-109 was originally powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestral engine. Spain built some after the war. They were powered by Hispana-Souza engines and then R-R Merlin engines. The one pictured looks to be a Merlin powered one. The one in the U-Tube video is MB powered. I'm not sure if it is the one 'captured' during the Battle of Britain. From what I've read, it is more maintainence intensive than a Spitfire to keep flying.
30,000 sounds like a lot. Look at production for the Mustang, Hellcat etc. They have just as high of production for a shorter span of time. I think the P-40 Warhawk/Kittyhawk was about 80K. The Me-109 was still a capable aircraft at the end of the war. The numbers game kind of flipped on the Axis powers. Instead of 5 to 1 in their favor (except against Russia) in the beginning, it was 5 or more against them in the late stages. Tom |

The 109 also has the distinction of having the largest victory total of any fighter in history. A number that will likely never be challenged again.

http://wernerhartenstein.tripod.com/hartmann.htm
Luftwaffe Major Erich Hartmann (1922-1993), the greatest fighter ace of all time Site map With 352 confirmed kills in a combat career of only two and a half years - November 1942 to May 1945 - and begun at the age of only 20, Luftwaffe Major Erich Hartmann was the greatest fighter ace of all time. Erich Hartmann, the son of a doctor, was born in Weissach, Germany, on 19th April, 1922. He was taught to fly gliders by his mother at the age of 14. He joined the Luftwaffe and was sent to the Eastern Front in the autumn in 1942. An outstanding pilot, he was appointed Squadron Commander of Fighter Group 53 in 1944. Flying an ME 109, he achieved 352 kills during the Second World War. In 30 months of fighting he flew 1,425 combat missions and was shot down sixteen times but was never wounded. Apart from six American planes shot down over the Romanian oilfields - including five Mustangs in one day - all his kills were Soviet aircraft. He was decorated with the Germany's absolutely highest military honour - the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Legends are made of people like this.

Indeed. But I wasn't just referring to individual aces tallies though of course they formed an important part of the total. I meant the total victories scored by the 109 as a type over all other fighters.

Just gotta have one ???
We know the new owners of this “Investment”.
If anyone’s interested in a unique Christmas gift. It’s a 1950 Spanish version. But, it can be had for much less than what the airplanes it’s older cousins shot at years ago are going for now. Got an RR engine in it too. Kind of a bummer, that. But better for DOCs and available parts.

In the second picture, that kind of looks like an ME262 jet engine on a stand doesn't it?

I'm thinking it was one of those pulse-jet/ram-jet motors they put on the bombs they fired over to the UK.
Too small for a 262 engine. But it does have those lines.

It looks to be an motor for a V-1 buzz bomb.
The F-6 Hellcat had the highest ratio of enemy shot down to losses. The Brewester Buffalo has the highest ratio of Aces to aircraft built. Here's a sight on german aces: http://www.acepilots.com/german/ger_aces.html Only thing I diagree with is that there won't be anymore aces. Desert Storm was an all out war. Saddam grounded his airforce and waited for the war to end. Used them latter. Tom |
