A320 landing Cusco-Peru

Here is a landing video from the pilot's perspective, flying into and landing in Cusco, Peru, which is not an easy Airport. Pilots have to navigate very precisly, unexpected cross winds can interfere dramatically often landings and flights are being cancelled because of this. Ofcourse, an A 320 is about the largest jet going in there.
Cusco's altitude is @ 3400 meters, thin air ...

Fascinating Peru!!!

The flight from Arequipa to Cuzco, over the snow covered Andes, was without question the most spectacular flight I have ever taken in my life.

The mountains are majesic and breathtaking, but when you look down, you know for sure, that if ever an in-flight mishap occurred, there is NO way in hell you could land safely, or survive, you would simply die in the crash.

I went to Cuzco in an old rattletrap Boeing 737, so worn out that even the seats in the plane were totally threadbare, in Peru all the mechanical things are run flat out until they simply wear out, and then patched up and run some more.

You would think that Cuzco, home to the most famous and visted attraction in all Peru, the Macchu Picchu ruins, would rate an International Airport, of its own, by now, but all you get is what you see in this video, this 3rd rate terminal.

The reason is actually pretty simple: If it had a full boat International Airport, people would simply fly straight there, and avoid going to Jorge Chavez International Aeropuerto in Lima.

Let's face it, Lima Peru is nobody's idea of an International tourist destination, but those in Lima want to keep it there, to bleed off as many tourist dollars as possible right there, rather than simply lose them all to Cuzco. I was told this very frankly by Limenos when I was there, I can see their point.

In truth though, it is easy to enjoy Lima. A lot of tourists simply don't bother.

The bridge of sighs in Barranco, Miraflores, the Gold Museum, La Rosa Nautica on the coast, upscale Jockey Plaza and many other places in Lima, make it a pretty interesting place if you take some time around there, as a city of over 9,000,000 does have some fascinating and cosmopolitan areas to enjoy.

I think it is good this way. It's one of the few resources on this planet which hasn't been completely taken over. I am talking about the Altiplano in general. It's an amazing environment.
Some do envision a large full scale international airport within the Altiplano. I doubt this will happen any time soon, or even in my lifetime.
It would be the end of this, mostly pristine region.

I will post some pics later.

Cool video. Once they touched done I felt the same way I always do when I fly. That being an expression of gratitude to the pilots for doing a good. job.

WVO probably knows this but, I wonder what the ground speed is when landing at that altitude and how that compares to say a cool day at San Diego?

Landing in La Paz, Bolivia is even more exciting. It's up at 12,000 feet, the runway is looong and the mountains around it are really high.

Not that sliding off into the water doesn't suck.
But, I'd overshoot into that lagoon all day long....

Over shoot this one, and.......

So - you meet a nice family at a livestock convention.

They invite you up to their ranch for a nice weekend getaway.

“Sure you can fly up !! We’ve got two nice runways to choose from !! And you can taxi right up to the guest house !!”

Sounded great to us.

Damn good thing we took the Caravan.

Nice pics. About that R.S. Plaza hotel ... it doesn't look so convincing though
