Can anyone identify this fabric ?

When we bought this bench we were told it was a woven leather. It is starting to show some wear in places and we want to touch it up, but nothing will cover the bare spots,,, not even shoe polish. I suspect it was sprayed with something. Anyone have any ideas ?

Stay away from shoe polish, as it will transfer to the clothing of those who sit on the bench.

If it's leather, you'll probably have to use leather dye.

That could be it,,,, I have searched and found some "close woven cane" that looks a lot like that. Most caning seems to be a natural finish though, and this definately has a top layer of something.
