Been playing with Winders Vista.....and like it.
It has some of the old clunky XP stuff but the broadband portion has been beefed up and it seems to be fairly stable..so far.

And it's getting better too! Microsoft is releasing SP1 here in a few weeks. This is going to solve many performance and confliction issues. I have Vista on 5 PC's now and have been very happy overall. A few issues here and there but most were pretty easy to solve.

I've got it on my laptop and it works ok but slower than XP.
My brother-in-law has it on his desktop and has had many problems. For example, Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) crashes all the time. If he opens two Explorer windows and tries to copy & paste image files from one hard drive to another it will crash every time. After several hours of trying many of the common fixes I was unable to get Windows Explorer to stop crashing. It's really weird because the only image files that cause the crash are ones that were originally copied to one of his hard drives via USB. If the image files came from a CD, DVD, Internet or anywhere but USB it will copy & paste fine.

My employer was going to make the switch in November but found some security issues that forced all of the trial installations to go back to XP. The move to Vista has been put-off indefinitely.

I'm still unhappy that I can't use 98 anymore. Too many things just were not working/designed for it anymore...
I've played with Vista. Not found it to my liking. Too protective, tries to do too many things for me. My mom's new computer is Vista, and we've yet to see anything that makes any of the rest of us want it. Girlfriend's new laptop is Vista, but I haven't played with it. The laptop itself is a bit of a point of contention, so I just let it sit. XP is problem free, still widely used, and allows me to do most everything I want to do (for now), why go messing with a good thing? MV |

There is a positive solution
to all of the Microsoft Windows nonsense. Buy a trouble free, intuitive, rock solid Mac; it will put an end to all the grief.
Best of luck, Jim

Vista doesn't have a folder up button.
Therefore, I will refrain from using it for as long as possible. That's not my biggest hangup. Using a gig of ram at idle out of my 4 gigs total (in 64-bit) is.

The "ideal" desktop for me would be a generic PC for hardware, Linux for the OS and the Mac GUI. Gnome and KDE have come a long way but they still don't compare to Mac or Windows. It's getting closer every day though!

I have the kubuntu and ubuntu releases of Gutsy Gibbons on my HD... but I keep thinking, every time, why switch? XP's been VERY good to me.
I look at my system's current uptime... [Operating System]:-[WinXP Pro, SP 2 (5.1 - 2600)] [Uptime]:-[Now: 14wks 4days 17hrs 56mins 48secs] And I figure if XP is this stable for me, what's the point of switching?

I have one PC running Ubuntu and another running CentOS. The main problem I have with Linux on the desktop is I can't run PhotoShop and QuickBooks without using something like wine. I'd rather drink my wine and run PhotoShop on Windows XP

My first computer was a 286 my parents bought me for Christmas. $2,800 in 87! It even had the 30MB harddrive. Windows sure was fun and easy back then. Took probably 5 minutes to boot though.

Wait until you have to use Office2007. It sucks so hard it will make Vista look great. Maybe thats their marketing strategy.
I think MS must have bought stock in memory chip companies because new hardware is the only way Vista will come close to XP speed.

My first computer was a IIGS! I think my parents paid $3600 for everything including the ImageWriter II printer. They got it in '86, I remember playing Will Harvey's Music Construction Set and Zany Golf constantly! I loved using headphones on Zany Golf because it sounded so good. Ah, the old days...
So, I figure soon someone will find a way to hack DirectX 10 onto XP and then I will have 0 reasons to migrate to Vista

I love Office 2007. It just takes a while to get used to where everything is. I find it very intuitive and easy to use for what I do. As for needing good hardware.. Absolutely! Don't even bother installing Vista on a 2 year old computer. The stated Vista minimum requirements is a joke. You need at least 1GB of RAM, preferably two. Any processor lower than 2GHz is a waste for running vista. I'll post some specs and pics of the PC I just built the other day. 14 GHz of processing power for starters!
