Get a newer car, or repair old one?

So guys and gals,

Should I dump about 2 grand into my 420sel and get it pretty nice, or should I just drive it lie it is as a daily driver and get a newer car? MY price range would probably be in the teens say no higher than 15k.

I say take your $2k and add $300 and buy this car: http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/car/521181572.html

Then keep your current car as a spare parts car, or vice-versa.

Thats basically what I got but with more mile. MIne needs new leather, a dash cap, new wheels and rear axles and a idle control valve and it should be good for now.

Id been in the same position this past summer, my thought was to sell the coupe and get a new Mercury Grand Marquis.

I finally elected to address the issues with the coupe, and about $1500 wisely spent on it at Mr MB in Tarzana, the car has been pronounced perfect, and indeed it runs as new, AC, Sunroof, all issues gone. New insurance replaced cracked windshield later, and roof/clearcoat problem done, it will be about perfect - needs nothing.

Ran it all day yesterday to San Francisco/San Jose and it was splendid, (about 400 highway miles) it drove as new. I would take the time to fix up yours, and remember, you can do it a bit at a time, as needed, no need to do it all at once.

Time has proven these were some of the best all around cars Mercedes made, they are durable, long lived, simple to repair, very safe comfortable and stylish, and the build quality was uncompromised - "cost no object" on them. No shortcuts were taken.

Well kept, there is no reason they could not last forever. Not like ordinary cars at all. Their unique qualities made them ultra expensive when new, cars for millionaires at that time. Price of gas is a concern, but they were sold new as "the best, and cost be damned".

I suppose it will do. I would look good in a W140 though.

Car costs this year?

Well, the year's almost over and I'm thinking of the money I spent on the car this year.
Not counting gas & oil,
1.About 475.00 (iirc) for a new exhaust system. (head pipe, resonator, muffler).
2. Had the belated 90k dealer svc done recently with a coolant flush. 920.00
3. Detailed (yesterday) $133.00...(lookin' good)

Sooo, the cost was about $1,500. Not too bad...for a 20 year old car.

Needs tires soon. Also, tensioner shock and front crank seal. Small stuff.
99,475 and counting..
Happy New Year!

I wouldn't replace your car with another used car. New, maybe. But only if it came with a really good warranty. Then again, such a car would be $20K+.

Fix it, a $15k car wont' give you the satisfaction of your current ride in any way.

well its not gonna be a new car. maybe a W140 S-class of a mid 90's C-class. I just gotta membership to MBCA so I really need to keep any newer car in the Stuttgart family so I get my monies worth of it.

You can probably get a 2000-02 E320 for $15k.

Naturaly since it is newer it would need much less attention and be in better shape then yours.
