any machinists here? need advice

My father has a large workshop, unfortunately, he recently suffered a stroke and relocated. I am keeping most of his machinery but I have no room for a Bridgeport Milling machine. It has a Bridgeport head on a Cederberg & Munk Hero 4P base. Does anybody know what these are worth, I plan to put it up for sale as soon as possible before I have to move it.

Look at this page : here

See if yours has features that line up with any for sale.

Every time I see an old vertical mill for sale, I get tempted to auction my soul....

Looks like a dinasour. But I've seen some pretty sad old mills still go for $2000 at auctions. If it has lot's of "stuff" with it, I'd list it for somewhere around that price. If it's just the mill, probably closer to $1000 to $1500. If it's not 3-phase, it MAY sell a little better. Hobby machinists are more likely to buy something like this, but few of them have 3-phase power in their garage shop. My brother and I bought an old table-top mill(made in the 70's) at an auction a few years ago, with very little accessories, for $400, and felt we got a bargain.
Poke around the 'net, as mentioned, even E-Pray, and see what they're going for. Alot depends on how tight the table is. A real sloppy table hurts the value. There's some adjustment in the gibs to tighten it up, but usually the wear is mostly in the middle of the travel, so there's only so much you can do with out alot of rebuilding.

If it's still pretty precise, could be an attractive item. Bridgeports are supposedly the gold standard. Ditto the above on accessories. If I had a permanent place and didn't live 3,000 miles away, I'd want it.

That said, I don't know market value at this point.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This milling machine has a single phase motor, a Bridgeport 'M' head, and some accessories e.g. collets, vise, bits, etc. I am researching with your advice and found just the head going for around$1000. My father used this machine infrequently but I cannot speak for its accuracy. I'll do some more research this weekend and probably put it up on ebay.

around here, a 2j bridgeport usually gos for $3500, upto 5k for a perfect specimen

How's the flaking on the table? this will really show common wear, and is usually the first thing you look at.

That base is a lot more stable than a bridgeport - reminds me of the highly sought-after wells-index machines.

My favorite machinist has one like that (at least he called it a bridgeport the other day and it looks to me like the same thing, but I am not a machinist by any means).

I used my truck and trailer to pick it up with him. I think he paid maybe 3000 for it. He usually does not buy anything unless it is for less than the market value, so it probably is worth more than that. IIRC the one he bought was in very good condition too.

I spoke with a friend of mine who deals in machine tools, and asked him to take a look at the picture. I thought he was going to post a reply here, and maybe he still will, but in the meantime, I will type what he told me.
The motor is not original, and was hopefully replaced with the same horsepower motor as the original.
He thinks that at best you can get a few hundred dollars for it - don't forget, that the buyer is going to have to spend a few bucks to move it to his/her place.

He told me a lot more about the machine, but more than 12 hours have gone by, and many braincells have since perished. - With some luck, he will register and post, and give you some more info.

Good luck with that thing!
