Is yours that green color ? white cloth interior ?

I have the same thing in a '97. I'd take it off your hands (or even pay you a small sum) just for the parts value. Ohio is a "no inspection required" state now =) Sorry, I can't make it to CT anytime soon though.

That car would be a tough sell in CT if it doesnt pass inspection. I don't think that the 2.slow motors are tough to figure out, but, if you dont want to spend or try new MAF or Throttle body then your options are limited. Know anyone with a VAG-COM ? (VW special code reader)

No it won't pass with the CE light on, so as soon as I get the letter its a parts car, well after the date. A MAF is like $200, NFW. My dads friend may be junking another so if I can strip the parts of his for free I might try a few things. I could fix it if I wanted to throw a few hundred and some hours at it, but I won't. After that the trans will probably let go, you just have to cut your loses sometimes.

They all seem to run like crap, he has a stick 1996 that stalls all the time, no matter what he does. My uncle has a 97 that he towed behind his motor him with like 50k miles on it, and he says his stalls all the time as well.

The newer ones seem to be better, my cousin's boyfriend just got a 2000's Jetta, 03 or 04 maybe for Xmass. Its a better car.

*Update*

Well I havn't really been doing much other than driving it. It seems that the head gasket above the trans is leaking, no pouring oil at an alarming rate! Enough to leave little pools on the trans! This car is amazing! Its like a rain forest underneath this thing! It would make any proper British car proud! It does stumble and puff some blue smoke once in awhile after you start it, so maybe its leaking into one of the cylinders as well? The PO probably overheated it at least once.

Lets see it still runs horrible, I drove it in 1st gear bouncing off the rev limiter for a few miles trying to put a rod through the block but no dice. It doesn't seem to burn any oil, its down about 1/2 on the dipstick since I started driving it in early december, its probably all from the leaks.

I found someone who wants to buy it from me for $300, sucker. Possible pending sale on that, I'd like to have it at least through Feb.

Fun...

Dude it's gonna scrap at like $200 for the car, $30-50 for the cat and upwards of $50 for the rims if they're aluminium.

My vote is to kill it...

Drained the antifreeze, and oil (as required by the scrapyard), and it still ran for a while.
It was knocking when I got it... Didnt last too well, but dang it was fun

Eh, those mk3's are pieces o' crap.
If it was a mk2... I'd wager it would withstand much more abuse.

I found out today from the PO, the head was replaced at 30k miles because the T belt snapped, under warranty of course. Now this is a quality POS!

Hmm... that sounds strange to me.

The VW 8 valve blocks are a non-interference design.

If the head was replaced, it wasn't because of a broken t-belt.

Actually, I am surprised the head was replaced at all... those 2.0 ABA engines are pretty bulletproof and are seldomly cracket open before 200,000mi.

If I had to wager on the durability of anything on that car it would be the engine... maybe it was overheated???

Possible, I know the head was replaced when the car was really young. You can tell by looking at it, that its been off before.

It was overheated last year I know that. The PO was driving it and the water pump belt snapped, knowing her she ran it until it stopped I'd be shocked if she new what the temp guage ment or even looked at it.

Amazing how you blame the car and its engineering when:

-You freely admit to beating the ***** out of it.
-You freely admit that the PO didn't have a clue about maintenance.
-You know that it was abused long before you got it.
-You admit it needs some parts to run right yet still blame the car.

Any car treated like this, even a MB would end up a worthless POS. I can understand killing the thing for fun, I too have done that a few times, but blaming the car doesn't really make sense. Besides, I am guessing you could buy 2-3 used Jettas for the price of ignoring the temp gauge in your SDL... RT

Even if this car was brand new I wouldn't like it. Its to small, rides rough, the interior is kind of cramped for my tastes, and their is no arm rest. The lack of an arm rest REALLY bothers me, I just can't get comfortable in it. Even coming from diesels I find it lacks a lot of power, it feels slower than the SDL. Not so much around town because its so much lighter, but on the highway over 70 the SDL would walk away from it like nothing. The steering wheel is kind of small and high, and the adjustment is a joke. The wiper stalk is annoying, and the turn signal stalk is to short. I'm not sure why it has a headlight switch since it doesn't seem to do anything?

I have to say the brakes are pretty decent and the engine is the best part, when it runs right it does pretty well. The ODO sticks but I'm going to guess since my driving never really changes that its getting low 20's. The money burn at the fuel pump seems to be similer to the SD. The trans shifts like it should, very similer to my Toyota's actualy. I also sense that with a properly sorted suspension, and some aftermarket parts it would probably be a very nice handling car. A stripped out dropped version would probably make a nice autocross car.

I'm getting a 1996 with a stick for next winter, which should be very fun. Like this one the price is $0, it has 170k miles on it, but its cleaner.

Well I have about $300 into this, and if I sell it for $300 it would be pretty much a free car. I'm not counting gas and insurance because I would have been driving something else.

Considering that the PO probably changed the oil every 10k-15k miles and other than that did...nothing for the last 50k miles...The trans fluid looks like the oil in your 300D.

Not much different than the regularly scheduled MB service bulletin... customers of newer MB's are told to come in when the little wrench pops up in the cluster, indicating either an A or B service. I've often seen cars do that after 15,000mi.

Now they spec 13k miles or once a year, FSS has been dead since 2004?

Going 13k miles on synthetic oil when the sump holds 8 quarts is fine. Going 15k miles on the cheapest dino oil you can buy is another story. Hence the FSS lawsuit.
