Smith & Wesson question...

My buddy is getting a .45 S&W pistol tomarrow. I don't know the exact model but its there full size .45 semi auto, how many can they make? Any input from you gun experts? Are they any good?

I was thinking something like a Glock 26 would be better for conceled carry, which he is considering getting his permit for. The Glock 26 is nice and small, and I thought Glocks were bullit proof. But the gun store owner said Glocks have a very light triggar and poorly designed safety. So you can shoot yourself in the foot real easy, like the DEA agent on Youtube.

He also wants a .45 insted of the 9mm. Which I guess is the never ending debate... He wants the .45 because its more powerfull, might as well bring the largest cannon to the fight you can. So I suggested the .50AE Desert Eagle.

The store owner did say that H&K and Sig are the best of the best, just expensive. When I get a pistol I'm getting the H&K because I like buying German. They had an H&K Socom with the silencer there, Hattie wants! What do you need to do to get a silencer? I was told just pay a tax? The laser is a nice touch, but sadly extra.

Well, S&W made quite a lot of models!

The more common full-size are:

4506 - full size, steel frame, steel slide, Double Action/Single Action trigger
4543 - full size, alloy frame, steel slide, Double Action/Single Action trigger
4586 - full size, steel frame, steel slide, Double Action only trigger

Slightly smaller:
4513 - steel frame, steel slide, Double Action/Single Action trigger
4576 - steel frame, steel slide, frame-mounted decocker like the 10mm 1076, which was briefly used by the FBI.

Others:
CS45 - compact, "Chief's Special"
457 - compact, blue economy version of the CS45
M&P .45 - full size, polymer frame

There are model revisions, or "dash" versions, such as 4506-2, which signify an update to the previous design.

Then, there are the TSW (Tactical S&W) series, which were an upgrade to the standard models, and included rails for tactical lights. They are reported to be a significant upgrade to the non-TSW

There are a lot of others, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

Like single-malt scotch, all are good, some are better.

From a Fed standpoint, silencer is just like full auto - ya gotta buy the special license. I know a guy who has more than one of each. He also has one of the best Colt collections in the country.

Silencers are sort of ineffective on semi-auto pistols.

Thankfully no. God bless America, you can buy just about any gun!

I was told you just need to pay a pretty expensive tax to get a silencer. If I go to the gun store tomarrow I shall ask!

The Smith auto's of their own design are awful, I had a Mod.469 that just about impossible to reassemble after a teardown and cleaning, it had all sorfts of levers and sears that didn't want to lay down. Dreadful design. The .45's that are modeled on the classic 1911 should be a different story, but I've never picked one up.

Smith revolvers are a joy...I have a 1960's era Mod.36 that is just beautifully built, looks great, shoots reliably and doesn't leave brass laying around for evidence like a magazine-fed weapon does.

That is a fine gun. A proper revolver in a large caliber. The only drawback is half moon clips and quick reloading.

Yeah, if I was looking for a .45 I would get a revolver.

Hattie you made some incorrect assumptions, IMHO.
The .45 isn't the "largest gun" to the fight. It doesn't compare to the .357 or 44 magnum so leaping to the Desert Eagle is kind of rediculous.

The .45 has superior peneterating power it's the perfect intermediate size. It won't glance off like the smaller caliber rounds can and it's not as heavy to wield as the larger caliber weapons.

Tell your friend to look at a Kimber, I really like them. And use spell check sometimes

Kimbers costs more than Sigs (and many HKs) to which his friend alluded he could not afford.

I have an Ultra 10 in .45.

The tax to transfer a silencer is $200, the same as a machine gun. Every buyer pays it, whether it's new or used. There's also some paperwork to fill out; the same paperwork you'd need to buy a machine gun.

They're illegal in Illinois (and possibly elsewhere) but legal federally. It would work better on a semi-automatic if you lock the slide.

.40 is also something to consider, if he thinks 9mm is too small. Bigger than you need does no good and limits the number of rounds that you can fit in a magazine. Of course, if you need more than two, something else is wrong.

This is the way I have heard the story related in the past. As a result I have always avoided SW semis. Things change, I haven't looked into this for several years.

Make sure the gun fits your hand and has a natural point. If the gun isn't pointed where the "feel" says it is, it is useless. This is a common problem with high capacity handguns. One hit with a 45 is better than 19 misses with a 9mm.

Try paintball if you are interested in guns.
