Angry Why do bosses seem like such morons?

Why do bosses seem like such morons sometimes?

It often amazes me that it is often not "the cream that is rising to the top." I know this is not always the case, but somedays it certainly seems like it. In some cases it is absolutely the situation.

My last boss inherited his company. It was obvious he could have never gotten it started and built up to the point that it was by the time I started working there. I always felt like I had to keep him out of anything important for fear that he would screw it up. My fears were always well-founded.

There are good and bad bosses...

...it takes a certain level of skill to pull it off effectively. Unless you are at the top of the heap (i.e., Chariman of the Board), you are taking marching orders from someone above you, while having to answer to why your staff produces the crap they do....all the while, buffering the staff from the backlash that ensues. Usually, the budget and staff manpower is far short of what is necessary to produce good results, so the boss has to be creative...the good ones know how to leverage this...the bad ones only know the "row faster" technique.

The other issue is that for most big firms, the guy that gets promoted from a staff position probably got there as a result of achievements acquired by the use of their skillsets...usually far different from what are useful traits as a manager. At that level, very little desk work is involved as meetings take up most of the time...so office politics are the norm here. Those don't translate well when relating to staff workers, hence the "my boss is an a$$" syndrome.

From being the "boss" of this forum I can understand.

You can never please everyone, someone will always be pissed at you. And as said above when you are a middle man it makes it all the more fun!

Add a set % of the profits to their paychecks, and you can come pretty damned close.

I put up with that moron I used to work for for a long time, mainly because I was well compensated. Money covers a multitude of sins when it comes to moronic, nasty, mean-spirited bosses.

My Boss is a moron too! Oh wait, I'm self employed!

Seriously, if you can work for yourself, do it! You may end up making less money but the rest of it I wouldn't give up for anything so its very worth it. RT
