Super Hybrid

I just saw on the www a company took a Saturn suv, and modified the hybrid to attain 150 mpg. The electric motors will take it 40 miles without the gas engine igniting and powering it. It is supposed to be displayed at the auto show in Detroit coming up. It wil, also, run 87+ mph on the electric motors.

This is probably one of those plug-in hybrids (like the GM volt) that will run for about 50 miles on the initial charge. The logic is that people mostly take short trips so the average mileage is very good.

BTW, why are we talking about hybrids?

Really, this is more of an OD or Tech Help topic.

Also, that energy still had to come from someplace....the wall outlet in your house. And that costs too. Or you could try to locate a public outlet and charge there. Then it really is free.

As some have suggested...what is the real cost of operation? These proponents of new transportation technology need to post Cost Per Mile not MPG which they elude too! If it is a "plug in" hybrid and it raises your electric bill $150-$200 per month plus the cost of fuel what kind of financial savings & energy conservation is that? Whats the real picture?

My 98 E300 TD cost me about $.10-.11 per mile on the highway in fuel ($3.49 per gallon of Diesel) Add the cost of maintenance, tires and insurance in and it brings my cost of operation to $.16 to $.18 per mile not including the initial price of the vehicle. So I wonder how the hybrids stack up in those terms?

It costs me about $7/hour to drive my E300 on the highway. $7 will buy 63Kwh of power here (more or less), so $7/hour will sustain a continuous 63Kw load. That's about 85HP, and I'm not using nearly that much power on the highway. I haven't factored in the losses in the system, but there's a whole lot of room for that. Electricity is much, much cheaper than gasoline or diesel fuel.

It is true that electric is way cheaper than gas, but if everyone added the load of charging a car to the US's crumbling electric grid, it'd probably cause some big problems. Plus we'd not have enough electrical production to meet the demand, and coal/natural gas use would go way up....carrying prices with it. So the overall impact and price is what needs to be considered. Driving an electric car 20 miles a day as a commute to work/around town etc would be very efficient and clean compared to a normal car, but if everyone does it, that power needs to come from somewhere.

I didn't want to rub anyone the wrong way posting a hybrid on this site bym. The reason was just fft, and the continual confrontations on the energy & alternate fuel solutions. Also, like what will MB do?

Plugin types only shift the pollution to a different location (the power plant), they are not nearly as clean as people wish them to be. The emissions released from power plants (coal especially) ramping up production to meet the much higher demand of plugins would be far worse than using clean and efficient diesel cars instead.

Old powerplants do not have to meet emissions requirements of modern plants thanks to the Clean Air Act's grandfathering loophole.

"Clean coal" is not clean coal. The only clean and viable alternative is nuclear.

which is FAR from clean either. it just moves most of the pollution from air to soil and water.

Fortunately, we just got about $18B worth of load guarantees for new construction, but we are still looking at about 10 years lead time.
