Naple's garbage crisis

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22573281/

Lord have mercy, what a scene. Makes the sort of complaints we have about municipal services seem tame. The mob controls much of the garbage business there -- word I heard was they ship upper income northern Italy trash down to the southern, darker region, with toxic waste mixed in.

That's a lot of the problem but Naples could be the proverbial canary in the landfill site. Landfill options are decreasing here in Cal. Recycling is gradually becoming more common, thank God. Palo Alto has the best recycling center I've seen. In addition to all the normal stuff, you can drop off styrofoam, batteries, motor oil and filters, fluorescent lights, scrap metal of all kinds (big NO SCAVENGING sign above the bin for copper and alum), plactic bags, and they even have a Goodwill trailer on site, with attendant.

Could be an export item for us -- that is, trash management. Many parts of Europe are way behind the US and Cal in particular on things like air pollution, recycling. I hear that Cairo, for example, has really bad air pollution. I wonder how their vehicle emission controls compare to Cal's?

I've always heard that Naples is really filthy. I guess this is why.

I have it from a reliable source, Jimmy Hoffa is NOT in the footings of the Silver Dome, he is in the Naples landfill!

The year I lived in the Detroit area one day I was driving along an obscure road and passed the "Red Coach Inn", (where he was last seen).

I thought hmmmmmm. Having only heard the name spoken I had thought it was the "Redcoats Inn".

The Red Fox, on Telegraph Rd.

The Sunday after he disappeared, I was at an SCCA race at Waterford Hills. There were helicopters flying all over the place looking for him.

I imagine the mob probably made him into dog food, or something....

Dang! A totally wasted story! I could have sworn. Now I don't know if I forgot the name or never knew it and was the wrong place entirely!

I doubt it was on Telegraph road, the place I saw. It seems the image I have was a little kindof seedy place on a little two lane semi country road.

Telegraph is nothing like that, even 30 years ago.

Red Fox was a well known big and fancy restaurant at the time. I have no idea if it still exists though.

It's gone, but lives on under another name...

Watch out you'll rile the anti Italian defamation league (or name to that effect).

Oh well, this wasn't a topic that I thought would generate much passion -- after all, it's just them dang Your-o-peeins.

This is an incredible phenomenon to me. That there are too many people on earth could be debated I suppose but the degree to which we use the earth around us, and the demonstrable folly of much of that is hard to dismiss, IMHO.

My Peragorosity expert buddy would surely tell me this is NOT a sign of over-population.

I can imagine they'd be sensitive about that. The scene in Naples ought to be a wake-up call on the need to get a solid handle on that crap once and for all.

I've read that similar stuff happens on the east coast, what with mobbed up truckers steering tankers onto some lonely road to drain out large loads of toxic liquids.

The mentality is not far removed from the good ol' boy sneering at vahrn-mentalists and PC things like recycling.
