Any info on 2002 BMWs?

I am looking at a early model 2002 BMW (1975 or 1976). Does anyone know about this model...reliability...ease of repair, etc...

Thanks!

Don

Last time I checked, this forum was for Mercedes.

The 2002 is I believe a pretty well built car with good parts availability. They aren't as rugged as a mb but still pretty decent mechanically and very fun to drive.

The biggest weakness is rust.

Check the Bimmerforum out.

Back in the '80's I owned several 2002tii's. They were great cars. I always felt that they had it all. Great gas mileage (around 25mpg, I think), German reliability, a back seat, a relatively large trunk and unbelievably fun to drive. Well, maybe that isn't having it all, but it was better than what was being offered by the other manufacturer's at the time. Tom is right, the rust was a real problem with them. I was restoring 2002's at that time and darn near put my kids through college with repairing the rust and replacing the panels. They are very easy and forgiving to work on, too. I have not kept up with their situation recently, but I suspect there is still plenty of availability of parts for them.

PS-They had a tendency to overheat. This is overheating the cabin. Their HVAC was very marginal and if I can remember correctly. BMW had designed the heater to always allow a small amount of coolant to flow through the heater core. I believe this was meant to help the engine stay cool. The A/C unit was an add-on and not very effective. Many guys used the larger radiators from Pinto's to expand the cooling capacity of the engine.

Thanks for the info...

PowerPig, is this a MB Forum? I must have taken a wrong turn! Seriously, that is why I put this question in the Open Discussion. Not much of what is in this section reflects purely MB issues.

Thanks again

Don't sweat it - better topic than some I have seen lately in OD.

Sorry, been a bad day. Had to bury my favorite uncle today. Big Irish funeral, so I shouldn't be posting.

There is a guy here who has "2002" and a BMW reference in his handle--do a search I am sure he would be glad to talk your ear off. I know two guys that are fanatic about these cars and race the hell out of them, alas they are no where near your area.

Are you in old Wake Forest or in Winston at school? My dad went two years at the old campus and two at the new in the '50s. He and Arnold Palmer were suitemates.

Sorry about your uncle, Kevin. Did he live in this area?

1975 or 1976 are actually late model 2002s. Many prefer the early, pre-72 versions with their small bumpers and round taillights. '72 and later cars were saddled by increasing emmissions mods that reduced engine performance and gas mileage. Of course '74 to '76 had the bigger taillights and huge 5 mph bumpers. Later 2002s, like contemporary Mercedes, also had the dreaded thermal reactor exhaust manifold. The 4-cylinder 2002 crossflow- hemi engine is more efficient than contemporary Mercedes fours, but certain details make the BMW design more difficult to repair - replacement of camshaft or followers (not uncommon with very high mileage engines) requires pulling the head. The fuel-injected tii versions are most desireable to collectors, but parts for the mechanical Kugelfischer injection are becoming scarce, I'd recommend the more common carbed models as being more DIY friendly, and the 2V Solexes are easily replaced with a downdraft Weber. Factory BMW old-car parts support is a far cry from that of Mercedes.
They're all horrible rusters, so regardless of the year, try to find as rust-free an example as possible.

Happy Motoring, Mark

When I was younger, our family had owned 4 or 5 different 2002. Rust is a problem on all BMW of this era. The 4 cylinder engine is easy to work on. I could remove the head in two hours. Aluminum head with iron bottom. Over heating was a problem causing a warped head, but easily solved by replacing the radiator with a stagger tube radiator. A/C was a joke, robbed a lot of HP and delivered little cold air. The 74, 75, 76 models had emission controls that allowed the use of leaded fuel when most manufactures were switching to unleaded only. The car is a bast to drive. Lots of room in the back seat and truck for a car its size. The 4 speed trans was reliable. Only issue was worn out syncronizers after about 70K. Front disk brakes and rear drums. No power steering. Best bet is a carb engine with an after market weber. Dual side draft webers was a popular setup. The 4 cyl was buzzy at highway speeds due to the low gearing. The engine would turn around 3300rpm at 70mph.

I had a 1970 2002 (new) and the friend I sold it to had a 1973 2002 Tii (new). They were fun but somewhat fragile cars. The pre-73 cars had Porsche design synchros and the 2nd gear synchro was always weak. The '73 cars shifted to a different design and were more hardy but notchier. We never had rust problems but both cars were in California. The body was weak around the w/w shafts and would crack over time. A/C was aftermarket and pretty lousy. Engine overheating was an issue and if overheated the heads tended to crack. The big bumper cars weren't worth owning - too many issues as they added emission controls, jacked up the front end for bumper height rules. etc.
