I'm gonna miss her

About twelve years back I saw an advertisement for a 53 Studebaker Lowey coupe for sale in Anderson Indiana which is not far from here for a very cheap price so I meandered down there with my favorite machinist along to keep me from buying it if it were too far gone.

When I got there it was sitting out front with the sign on it. It had been listed as rust free but partly disassembled for somehting like $300. When I saw it I found things taken off that I did not previously know were actually removable and everything imaginable was inside the car stacked to the roof. I decided that it was wayyyyyy to much work and turned my attention to the fellows home, garage and barn.

There was a modest three bedroom ranch of maybe 1300 Sf with a detached garage that was near the same size. I asked if he had other cars and he took us on a tour of his compound.

Inside that garage was eight or nine cars parked so that you wondered how he ever got them in there....bumper to grill and door handle to door handle. There were Chevelles, Fords and what have you all in pretty good condition IIRC.

He then took us to his barn not too far to one side and in there were another several cars and lots of misc. parts including a complete looking 1953 Corvette motor (distinguishable by a dual carb manifold, a split exhaust manifold for duals and special printing on the valve cover. They also had high compression pistons, and a hot cam, IIRC).

In the back part of the barn in a lean to were two more cars, one of which was a 1939 Graham....the (unbelievably rare and stylish) model with the body built from the Cord dies.

As we were walking through this muesum like (to me) place (but very cluttered) it occured to me that this man could not possibly have a wife, so I had to ask.....

He said ...."well, I used to be married but one day she said it was either her or the cars that had to go......"

We chuckled and headed home.
