Woman Locks Keys In SUV; Dies Of Hypothermia

Hiker Couldn't Get Back Into Vehicle

POSTED: 12:46 pm EST February 8, 2008
MACON COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities said an Alabama woman whose body was found outside her locked SUV in a parking near a hiking trail died of hypothermia after being unable to reach her keys inside. The body of Sandra Ordner, 47, of Daphne, Alabama, Ala., was found on Jan. 31 hours after she had phoned home to tell her husband she was going hiking.Sheriff Robert Holland of Macon County, North Carolina, N.C., told the Press-Register in Mobile, Alabama, Ala., that it had been cold and raining in the hours before Ordner's body was found in the parking lot of the Whiteside Mountain Trail.A funeral for the Atlanta native was held Wednesday in Norcross, Georgia, Ga.Second Macon County Tragedy In Recent Weeks
Macon County was also the location where the skeletal remains of missing hiker John Bryant, 80, were found a week ago. The cause of his death has not yet been released.John and Irene Bryant disappeared while hiking in the Pisgah National Forest in October. Irene Bryant's body was found in the forest in November after an extensive search. The location where John Bryants' remains were found was about a two-hour drive from that location. Irene Bryant may have tried to fight off her killer. According to the autopsy report, she died from multiple blows to her head but also suffered a broken left hand and forearm.Investigators said they believe that Gary Hilton killed the Bryants.Hilton, a 61-year-old drifter, has admitted killing Atlanta-area hiker Meredith Emerson, 24, and decapitating her. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison last week.

I could see this being used in an On Star commercial or something. You'd think she would have broken the window out or something, wouldn't you?

Recently, was reading a local newspaper, here in North Carolina. I don't have the article, but basically, this is what it said.

Man dies, while attempting to pull down tree with his pick-up truck.
Basically, what the remainder of the article explained, was that the guy didn't use a long enough rope, and pulled the tree down, on top of his truck, crushing and killing himself in the process..

My very first thought was break the f'ing window! Well, one of the rear ones specifically. Although that $50 deductible can be daunting.

She must have been stuck in the only forest on earth to not have a rock on the ground within 30 miles that could break a window.

Not to defend her rather under developed survival instinct but if she was a small woman and couldn't find a rock it could have been a bit difficult to break the car's windows. She probably didn't know that it is better to hit any of the door windows in the corner then in the middle.
The family will miss her but society migth not.

her size has nothing to do with it.

her survival instinct/ intelligence is.
the human can figure things out. like how to break the back window of the suv and use the bumper to gain access (if the car has no running boards.) even apes and mice have been proven in lab tests to think thier way our of simple situations.

I agree. A window seems to be a small price to pay compared to your life....

Wouldn't it be simpler to just use a rock? Where is the bullit going to go after it goes through the window? The seat? I'd love to see your reaction if she did that to your Ferrari!

"Honey I got locked out of the Ferrari so I had to shoot out a window."

Strictly not Darwinian, but strangely symmetrical with Darwin's intent.

There once was a girl named Lewinsky
Who played on a flute like Stravinsky
'Twas 'Hail to the Chief'
On this flute made of beef
That stole the front
page from Kaczynski.

------------

Said Clinton to young Ms. Lewinsky,
We don't want to leave clues like Kaczynski,
Since you made such a mess,
Use the hem of your dress
And please wipe that
stuff off your chinsky.

---------------

Lewinsky and Clinton have shown
What Kaczynski must surely have known,
That an intern is better
Than a bomb in a letter,
When deciding how best to be blown.
