MB Dealer Techs drive customers cars....
To the bank?
What would you do if you were in line at your bank this morning (that is 2 blocks from the Mercedes Dealer in Houston) and you looked over and you see a nice clean Mercedes Benz W211, with a Plastic cover over the driver seat, and a Guy wearing a Mercedes Benz technician shirt in the driver seat, making a bank deposit..... If I were the owner of the car, I'd be pretty mad. Anyone drop their MB off at Mercedes Benz of Greenway for service this morning?

He's just muti-tasking. Besides sometimes they have to drive the drive the car alittle longer and farther than around the block to make sure the problem they are working on is taken care of.

They have to check it out for proper manueverability in the drive through. Later, he probably took t to Taco Bell to check the FFAM* out.

At least the guy is sitting quietly, not doing nuetral drops and/or burnouts with the car.
The service writer or head tech are the only people allowed to test drive cars at my shop. Letting the tech do it wastes valuable time that he could use to fix another car. Besides, it lets us make sure the car is clean and that the problem has really been fixed. |

Happens all the time, but I agree that he's multi-tasking. Techs have no reason to drive around a cust car. There are no shortage of cars to use at a dealer and techs don't have time to "joy ride".
Typically writers get paid a salary plus commission. No time to waste. $$ The plastic is to protect the seats, not a new car wrapper.

I don't really use dealer or independent techs but if I did I'd certainly expect that the tech would road test the car before he signed off on a repair.
In fact I'd insist on it - and if the guy wanted to multi-task and do some banking during my road test it wouldn't bother me a bit.

Ah, the classic example of "frolic & detour" . . . I've always liked the sound of the "frolic" part.

Depends on a few things.
First off. If it’s my car or not. If not – Not a bunch I could do anyway. Who says it’s not a dealer loan car, etc? If so – Depends on what I took it in for. A transmission issue that I knew needed a warmed up road test for – I’d roll the window down and ask him how it’s going. (Though I might still bring it up with the service writer/mgr. for their thoughts on the matter.) An oil change, new headlight, replace the wiper motor… (not like I’d take it in for any of that) or something like an A/C service – I’d be a bit erk’d, and would for sure bring it up with the service manager. I might even call them from the drive through and ask: “Any idea why my car is being used for bank runs today??” Then I’d let them know how much (per mile) I rent the car out for such things.

Plastic on the seats typically means a customer car. CPO cars go to clean up after the tech gets done with them anyways so no need for the plastic.
While it is tempting to just take the car I'm working on out to run whatever errand- I don't, my car is usually just parked out back anyways and I just take it instead.

I know a shop owner who was out "joy riding" in customers RUF 911 turbo back when those cars were still new and very expensive. Someone else ran a red light and totaled the RUF. The insurance paid, but the owner was very upset.

Going on ANY personal business in a customer car is a terminable offense, no questions asked, where I work. Heaven help you if you are caught smoking in a customer car, even a customer who smokes.

If it's the shop I've dealt with now for several years it wouldn't bother me at all. I know the mechs and I know the owner -- good people, all. If they do a test drive and stop for lunch somewhere, okay with me. They have taken excellent care of my cars over the years and treated me fairly.
If it's a shop I don't know or just beginning a relationship with then I'd be pretty pissed-off. Like so much indignity us old folks face, "Depends". B |

Who cares?
Did you call to turn him in yet? Call the police next time, maybe he will get fired and you will done your part to protect society of such blatant disregard for your personal time, energy, and total waste of perfectly good carbon footprints. Give the poor fokker a break. Maybe the car is having some issues that need to be sorted out, or he has to deposit a check before his the court nails his ass for child support, or maybe he is swamped with work and he knows this is his only window to make a deposit because he knows a lunch break ain't gonna happen today. Regardless, it's none of your freaking business. What is the difference if he is idling at a stop light or the bank drivethrough. Damn dude, you obviously have too much free time.
