technology is killing music....

I just cant get this out of my head.

I'm listening to Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" right now.

I just love how the tension builds up in the song, how the verse gets a bit louder. You don't hear that anymore.

explains what I'm talking about.

when you can "fix" everything via PC; you don't need talent anymore.

Plugins like "autotune" are abused these days. not one pop singer has any sort of vocal talent. Marketing talent; sure - vocals NO.

Depends on what you listen to. Damian Marley is putting out music near the same level as his Dad.

Yep you just have to be more picky these days, and stay away from the cheap pop crap.

Or just say screw it and listen to AC/DC.

some of us try to find new music.

cant do that with a radio anymore; since 90% of what gets played is anything but music (or it's just older music sampled and beat to death...)

I don't listen to the radio much unless I am in the car and not talking on the phone.

I like some of the new stuff out their, Finger 11 has a couple of good songs for example. Carrie Underwood has an amazing voice, and is so HOT!

I think to some extent, depending on how you argued it, that you could say,
for instance, Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" from the early 1960's never "ruined"
pop songs for the Ronettes and people like that that who recorded them.

I have always enjoyed Cathy Dennis, the British cutie from Norwich in the UK,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS9GWfIu924

whose hit "Too Many Walls" actually was recorded with heavy reliance on synthesizers, and this was back in the very early 1990's. This was unheard of back in the 1960's....

Ther's no question that recording studios, remixing, and other aids can "tidy up" music and make the final, recorded product very fine indeed.

Certainly - in my opinion, - and of many others, it works.

That's why I would rather the final, cleaned up version of music from Agustana, Fergie, Matchbox 20 and the Verve (to give a few fairly recent examples,) than go and see them live in concert.

There is still alot of good music out there. Late 60/70's music still keeps blowing my mind, over and over. I think some of the best talent ever in Pop and Rock music has come forward during this period.

Not everybody has the same connection to it.

For this reason, I am very careful with digitized audio samples. The introduction of the compact CD to the market has brought enormous improvements for the listener.

Just recently, I purchased my first 2 downloadable music tunes (mp3). I will need a sound card upgrade in order to run it properly through my stereo system. By then we'll know more ...

It was until 1994, when I bought my first CD player, that I was still playing vinyl records on a $1500 Micro Seiki turntable with a likewise costly SME 3012 arm and Yamaha system. Not to mention amps and speaker system.

Since in one of the threads Amy Winehouse was brought up and compared with Janis, I did a youtube search last night on Winehouse. Apparently there are a couple of songs on there, one of which doesn't even sound too bad. Not withstanding the nature of music video production compared with performances during the above named period ....

In other words, characters like Amy can't hold a candle in the light of icons such as Janis.

"White Rabbit"? Geez, talk about an old outdated, irrelevant song. If that's your yardstick for what's good, then you should keep your mind where you're most comfortable - the '60s. There was great music in the '70s, the '80s, the '90s, and, yes, even today there's great stuff. I'd argue there's new stuff out there now that's making its way to the mainstream solely because technology is bringing them forward - certainly the "music industry" won't take a chance on these guys.

I'm 39, grew up in the '80s listening to '60s music. In the '90s, I listened to '90s music. Currently, I listen to new stuff and no '60s music, some '80s, some '90s, and a lot of current - thank you XM radio. My problem with '60s music is that I've heard it over and over and over for thirty years - enough already.

Exactly right....

Bad music is what's killing music.

Good music is timeless. I don't care what era it came from, I don't care what genre it's considered.

My ears and my mind tell me what a good song is. A good song will include good musicians, but also good recording/mastering.

These days everything sounds muddy; and ever since Nirvana came about, the "Power Chord" is all to popular, along with the same droned out chord progression. Hell, the power "Chord" is not even a chord at all - it only consist of two different notes (root-fifth-octave) I'm tired of it, really I am. The electronic music I listen to has more soul than any of the pop acts I've heard - and it's all full synthetic...

Music started becoming video oriented marketing hype somewhere around 90s and it has gone downhill ever since. It totally lacks any true talent or genius. No more Freddie Mercury or Roger Waters or even the greats from the 70s like Bee Gees or Abba.
