How do you cut letters in copper sheet
I need to cut several small (font size 40) words into .016 copper sheet. Very thin. I tried repeatedly going over it with a razor but it is just not going to happen. I know there are such things as jewelrs saws that use a thin abrasive string but i dont know where to buy one and dont have the time to order one. I need this done by thursday. I have alot of chemicals (i used to be into chemistry) but i dont know what will readily eat up the copper and I dont have ferric chloride. Any ideas please!? its very important (a gift for a deceased loved one)

Without taking it somewhere to have it cut, with like a water jet ... you could use a dremel and a rotary bit and take your time.

Yeah. Sold my dremel years ago. But Ive changed plans. I tinned the entire surface of the copper and I will only need to get trhough the thin layer of tin to get to the copper. Im thinkng I can mask letters out with electrical tape and then put an acid on the tin to dissolve it, leaving the copper underneath (even if the acid attacks the copper, doesnt matter really). If anyone is good with chemistry here by chance what will dissolve lead free solder (tin basicaly). Im going to try muriatic acid in the morning. Ive already tried lye solution and draino

This is just a theory but you may be able to go to an office supply store and pick up some transfer lettering like Chartpak and apply them to the piece. Then, Radio Shack sells the acid used to etch circuit boards. You can soak it and it removes everything except where the letters are.
The only problem is that you don't have much time to experiment and get the process right...

Exacto Knife? I remember having some real fine points on some of them back when I was into car modelling.

Take the copper sheet and use the press on letter stickers as your mask. Then use liver of sulphur to patina the copper and rinse it before peeling away the letters. That should work or use a black patina on the tinned surface the same way. After that you need to polish it with some carnuba to seal it from oxidation.
