What's in YOUR name?

In the interest of light-heartedness and keeping the subject matter away from politics...

How did you get your first and middle name? Who are you named after? Named after family members? Historical family name? Historical figure? Parents threw a dart at a board?

I was named after my two black-sheep uncles, many would say rightly so. My first name is after my maternal lefty, neo-hippy, former USCGA, masseuse, yoga instructing, organic, latte sipping uncle in WA state. My middle name comes from my paternal right-wing, borderline MI militia, former Navy pilot, gun toting, profanity laced, personal submarine building, engineer, beer swilling uncle in ME.

Before my brother and I were born, all of the first born sons had the mother's maiden name for their middle name and the second born had the grandmother's maiden name for a middle name (my sister was the first female born in our branch of the family for 5 generations so they had to scramble for her). All of them quite Anglo sounding. My mother has a German maiden name so they decided to name us after family members.

It's a good thing they set the precedent with us since my wife's maiden name is very German and ends with -dorf. That combined with our last name would make it sound like a bodily function. Again many might say rightly so.

first name is after my dads father.. middle name is after my mothers father....

which is funny since both of my grandpas names are just the opposite of the others which my first and middle name are derived from..

I'm a junior, so there's no confusion there. My son, on the other hand . . . . Don't get me started . . .

Do you know who your father was named after?

I cursed my son #1 as a Jr. It didn't take long for the paperwork and registration follies of that decision to show themselves. Especially since we call him by his middle name. We really screwed him up before he even got started.

It's even more fun when yu can't figure out which should be the "back." I'll have a glass of Zinfindel with a Macallan back please.

I was named after an Uncle who was killed by a German sniper, while he was leading a platoon through a small town in France, shortly after D Day. I have his Purple Heart and Flag in our great room.

I was named after my dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. Being the fourth and having experienced a great deal of inconvenience due to sharing a name with a financial disaster (dad), I decided to name my son after the men in my family without going to the 5th. My first name is Harry and my son's middle name is Harrison.

Dad's first name came from an uncle. When HE turned out to be an akahallik, they changed his middle name, but I don't know where it came from.

I considered giving my son my name, but then somebody said, "Then he'll be a 'third' and his friends will call him 'Turd,'" so I gave him a different middle name.

Diego DelFuego the Turd? Not so bad, I could see it on a theater marquee.

That is a cool history!

My great uncle was lost at sea during WWII after his ship hit a mine (my late grandfather's douche bag 2nd wife absconded with his Purple Heart) and my brother named his son after him which I thought was a cool tribute. His name was odd enough that I would never name my son it so I thank my bro' for taking care of that.
