How often do you go to junkyards?

Me, I can't seem to get enough of junkyards. I've been going regularly trying to find a good set of leather seats and the famed euro headlights. I have been only to find mainly pre 86' mercedes, and quite a few euro versions as well. I did find a set of good leather seats, but they were not the right color and they got snatched up the next week anyway.

I hadn't been to any of them for years, because my cars were newer and I was too busy, and they were too far away.

But since I got in with DieselKraut23, iwrock, SirNik84, TurboBenz, and Jeremy5848 from this forum, I have been going a lot, (every month) and I really it.

It was like being a Law student again, when I went there all the time to get parts to keep my 1967 Cougar running.

It is ALWAYS
a lot of fun to score that elusive part you were looking for, and maybe find something you weren't - and get it yourself, for a great price.

Plus it is fun to see the cars, and see what COULD happen to yours, and speculate on the lives the cars led, who owned them and how they got to the yard.

I find that frequenting the new car showrooms of British and Korean brands alleviates the need to stumble around some grimy junkyard.

You don't have to. The parts fall off on their own.

I try to go about once a month. For the $1 they charge, it is cheap entertainment - even if I don't buy a thing.
Last time I was there, I was mildly surprised to see an Edsel there - it was rusty, but not unrestorable. There was also a 61 Electra 225 there, that shouldn't have been there, in my opinion. I have seen worse pieces of crap restored on those TV shows that restore pos's and sell them for mucho dinero.
Last time I did get a $3 rear view mirror.... mine inexplicably broke about a month or so ago...and with jiggling was getting to me. (btw, another member's mirror broke within a day or two of mine breaking - weird, huh?)

Like I said...it's cheap entertainment, and you get to see stuff you normally don't see.

My father had a new '75 Caprice Estate wagon that he purchased the year I got my driver's license. It had these convex-shaped hubcaps that for some odd reason would never stay put. BTW, this car was a bi*ch to set up in a four wheel drift on a dirt road...

My plan is to get to the local P&P at least once a month during the spring. Summer will probably be too busy!

I try to go at least once or twice a month, I've found TONS of great stuff. Really great if you've got a bad benz habit without much money.

Not often enough! When I was younger I hung out at my local yard pulling apart things like a 1967 GTO and a 1978 Impala. I used to love just going through the rows looking at the cars and wondering how they ended up in the yard. I would take trim pieces off the interesting ones... Got an Edsel front grill ornament and other cool 1950's things that way

There was one Chevelle in the yard up on top of another car. It looked pristine and had the keys in it. I climbed up and gave the key a twist and the darn thing cranked and fired up! I just about jumped out of my skin and shut her down so fast I had key shaped marks in my palm! Must have been a mob thing...

Hmmm now that I am in West By God, I will have to haunt the local boneyards...

Need Jeep parts anyway

Ahh, so I'm not the only one! lol

And I have been going to local Socal junkyards (there are tons of them) a lot lately, and there are usually about 6 W126's at each...I have found some cool parts. Like perforated leather seats that aren't torn at all! They aren't the proper color, but it pretty easy to redye them.

Seems like I see lots of cars that don't really look like they should be there... For instance, the W126 I took the seats out of...91' 560SEL, the interior and exterior were mint, not a dent anywhere and the paint was perfect...even the engine looked fine...sad.

British and Korean makes? What an odd combination.

Junkyards aren't what the used to be. Nowadays, it's more like a salvage industry. The worst are those who charge admission to enter the yard, only for you to find out, that there is nothing to find ....
