Lost trade confirmation

Has anybody here ever lost a trade confirmation from when they purchased a stock? I can't seem to find one that is at least 5-6 years old. I can't even remember who the broker was that I got it from. I am trying to find proof of my basis in the stock for my taxes. Any ideas?

If you keep your monthly statements, you can find the trade on the statement in most cases. But, not remembering the brokerage house probably eliminates this option...........

Yeah, I thought of that. I used to save EVERYthing . . . until somebody gave me that damned shredder for Christmas one year.

I lost a stock certificate and got it replaced. All i needed was the account number. I got it from the company I invested in. Then I needed a Lost Security Bond. once I had that they issued me a new certificate. Best $700 I ever spent.

If you know the approximate date you bought it, Yahoo has a lookup for historical share values.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, Mistress, I DO keep them in a filing cabinet. I just didn't have a very good filing SYSTEM back when I bought this particular stock. Fortunately I don't participate in any DRIPS, so I know my basis. I just wanted to make sure I could defend it if I was audited.

A lost security bond is based on the valu of the stock when the security bond is purchased. If the value is low right now because of the market as a whole now might be the time to replace that certificate.

I don't hold any stock certificates. I'm talking about a trade confirmation. That's your receipt for when you buy and sell the stock. It is your proof of when you bought or sold it and what the price was.

Do you want to borrow the cost basis order receipt from the first order confirmation of Berkshire-Hathaway shares I bought 24 years ago? Give me three minutes to dig-up the paperwork........

Is it 1989 or is your siggy off?

If so, I'm only 10 years old and I'm going to go watch Scooby Doo instead of touting my financial prowess online.
