Need Shipping Help...

A friend on the east coast found a real deal AMG Body kit for a W124 Wagon....

We are having a problem with finding adequate shipping for this...

Most companies say that this is freight shipping, and that it will cost tons of moola....

But thats only because of size... All the pieces dont weigh more than like 55 or 60 lbs....

Anyone got any advise, or can anyone offer suggestions?

How do you guys ship large stuffs?

I got a transmission shipped to me from New York to Texas via FedEx Freight for $175. Of course, the tranny fit on a pallet and that made all the difference.

I work for FedEx and although I get discounts for Express shipping, there is none for me with regards to freight. So that was a typical customer quote for the tranny.

Unfortunately, you are dealing with what we cal in our business, "Dim Weight" or dimensional weighting. In layman's terms, we have to charge not just for weight, but also for the space it occupies. If you were a distribution center, your shipping would be lower overall because you can cram a bunch of smaller items along with your body kit, and the total would fit inside a shipping container. But your only shipment is the body kit, and you are being charge for the amount of room it would take inside a plane or truck.

Unfortunately, unless you might find a small-scale carrier to accomodate, you are probably going to get the same answers from the big three (UPS, FedEx, and DHL).

I ran into the same problem with trying to get a rocking chair shipped...shipping costs exceeded the value of the rocker!!

Volume is the killer on shipping. And the best bet is to probably build a crate for it do protect it during shipment. Some people have used Greyhound terminal to terminal but I don't know what their dimensional cutoffs are. If you want to take a chance and not crate it up that might be the best option.

If you want to play it safe, crate it up and had dimensions and total weight I can get pretty good rates through freightquote with a commercial discount. It does add up pretty quickly if either or both the pickup and delivery destination do not have a loading dock. If not, try to find someone who might that would do you the favor of being the pickup and/or delivery location.

If you get me those numbers I can give you an idea on cost.

Pete, your 10 hours closer than I am....

I should give it to you instead...

There are two boxes...

First is 72"x38"x18" and is 30 lbs...

Second is 81"x10"x10" and is like 15 lbs...

Its going from 50315 to 95610...

Ok, so its close to the east coast, although not quite the east coast....

Just a starting point without details but:

(Lowest) Loading dock to Loading dock-50315-95610
Central Express $163.32
FedEx National LTL $187.08

(Highest) Residential to Residential
USF $284.39
Fed Ex National LTL $347.24

Delivery and/or pickup at the trucking companies terminals can lower the residential prices.

Oh NOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol anyways... Greyhound would be good, but you could also post an add on craigslist, just incase anyone reading that is driving that way...

FYI I shipped 4 tires through USPS for like $50... FedEx wanted twice that, and greyhound wouldn't do it...

Good luck
