Stirling Engine Generators?

I came across this link:
http://www.stirlingengine.com/ecommerce/product.tcl?usca_p=t&product_id=84

Has anyone seen one of these in actual use?

Thanks for the link .That would make a great power source.Have you seen the youtube solar powered versions?

I wonder how practical they would be for home power generation. It seems like you could use Fresnel lenses to focus the sun and also use a wood stove, or other burner as a backup.

I think GM uses one. One of the big 3 has one. What they do is recycle the fumes from painting and it powers a Stirling generator. It puts out enough power to light.. 3 home

That's pretty cool. I've never seen one. I do have a fascination with the Listers/Listeroids and do hope to get one someday for power at a currently powerless camp (dump) we have in ME that we bought for the lot. The thought of generating our own power on WVO intrigues me and is obviously quite appealing.

I'm interested in the agricultural diesel engines for generators too.

I have a 9600w electric kiln that I want to find a cheaper way to power, so I'm always searching.:D The idea of being able to switch the heat source as desired/needed makes the Stirling generator worth looking into.

I'd love the ability to play and experiment with glass techniques in the kiln without a "Chuck Norris roundhouse kick" delivered from PECO.:D

I wonder ... if I exhaust my kiln to the stirling generator, would it be self-sustaining.

Wouldn't that be great!!! What kind of draw does that kiln have? Hmmm...trying to think of a reason it wouldn't work.

All I can say is, it's good I have a digital meter head. I think the old spinning style meter would've caught fire.:D

Definately a cool idea - I've never even heard of it. Did you buy the book?

Did you get that 5 acres of Independence book from amazon yet? Mine's still en route....

SwampYankee 03-18-2008 11:04 AM

I have visions of Christmas Vacation in my head when the lights finally work. :D Emergency nuclear powerplants kicking in...

Wails from the neighbors as they lose power when it's diverted in your direction.:)

I didn't order the book. I wanted to see if anyone else knew about them first. If GM is utilizing them, it must be valid. I'll keep looking to see if there's a better book first.

I did get the 5 acres book and have been enjoying it. There are some very cool ideas, including a dumb waiter fridge that cools the old-fashioned cold cellar way.

Yup, it's just like that.:D

So I just got my first issue of "Mother Earth News" yesterday and saw an ad for a hot tub with a wood burning heater.

http://snorkel.com/index.php

It would be cool to use a Stirling engine to operate some jets.

I like it. You try it first and then I'll copy your hard work.

I finally got the 5 acres book.....saw that dumbwaiter figure you mentioned. I can't even imagine having something like that in your house.

I liked the relatively simple cistern plans and filtering system for rainwater. Greenhouse sketch too. Took me some time to track down the corresponding text to each figure though.
