Annual "Burning Man" event in Nevada: Anyone know about it?

I have been made aware of this and it sounds very interesting and have been given the opportunity to attend it this year.

Has anyone ever been to it, or knows anything about it?

alright i saw a video of last years burning man and i will say that it is very interesting. Lots of naked ugly people walking around. The event has to do wih art and everything there is art. from what most people bring or represent is art. If i could rap everything up in a couple of words i would have to say "artistic hippy convention". if you have the chance to go just go, it sure will be interesting, maybe not of your liking but hey if you enjoy it when you get there then have a great time.

We did ’04 and ’06. An absolute blast.

Must have:
Dust Masks
Sun Screen (and lots of it)
Light cotton everything.
Many (as in MANY), memory cards for your camera.
Tons of water
Long tent spikes and a heavy hammer.
Single?... Condoms
Married?... Take the wife, for sure. (And, keep telling each other you’ll never see these folks ever again.)

Must do:
Leave kids at home. (obviously)
Pretend you’re 19 to 23 again.
If anyone hears your wifes Brit accent and asks where she’s from – don’t say: Texas.
Lock your car. (we had no issues, but heard of many others who did)
Keep anything political to yourself. (Like Boom stated: It’s a hippy convention.)
Zip the door, but never shut the windows of your tent.
Keep your full name to yourself.
Go out in your back yard and work on your (all over) tan well before you go.
If you’re briefs and not boxers…don’t even go. (That holds true for the wife/GF as well.)
Don’t wear a watch.
Don't worry about your friends seeing your wife naked, you get to see theirs too, so it's even. (Nobody gives a ---- anyway.)
Keep one hell of a big grin on your face. (This is actually quite easy.)
Do not (as in DO NOT) miss a wedding.
Remember that there’s no such thing as telling your wife and/or friends that your “…just going to go check something out for a minute, and we’ll meet back here….”

$210 per ticket and no ticket sales at the gate.

Nevermind, the $210, $225 and $250 tickets are sold out.

A friend of mine went several times back in the '90's and said it was a blast. I don't know anybody else.

From what I've read, you can't drive any "conventional" vehicles - only artsy, home built creations. I believe they have a tanker truck there selling gas at astronomical rates as well. Some friends and I were going to go there and do Mad Max re-inactments but after seeing the price and the logistics of getting everyone and the vehicles there, we kind of bagged that idea...

Take a good carbon filter respirator, mainly for the tight fit to your face -- the paper dust masks might not be sufficient, but would be better than nothing. A woman friend of mine whose son goes frequently tells me it's the kind of dust that can damage your lungs -- moreso than regular old dust. They sometimes have hellacious dust storms.

I hear the thing is so huge, you can never really see all of it. I might go someday but the older Rainbow gatherings appeal to me more.

I've thought it would be fun to go to at least once. Maybe I'll put it on my "bucket list." The photographs and video I've seen of it were really wild! I think the first time I ever heard of it was in Wired magazine.

I think we're pretty much all in agreement that it would be a lot of fun. Your comment is redundant, sir!

DieselAddict 03-25-2008 02:15 PM

I live only a couple hours away from where it takes place but I've never gone and probably never will. I don't know about homos, but yes a lot of hippies and a lot of drunks hang out there. No thanks.

Dee8go 03-25-2008 02:19 PM

Oh, c'mon. Where's your sense of adventure?

DieselAddict 03-25-2008 02:21 PM

IMO there are much better outdoor activities around here than this event. Things like skiing, swimming (in Lake Tahoe or Pyramid) or hiking.

Dee8go 03-25-2008 02:21 PM

I bet Chuck Norris would go . . . .
