Back on topic yo.

My school of thought holds this:

If you bother to post something, and want people to read it, you will have to "meet them halfway" by using grammar/spelling/punctuation that makes your post readable. Doesnt have to be perfect, but it does need to be legible....
...if you really want someone to read and respond to your post.

A Brother of mine once was an avid online gamer (older bro) and was continually dismayed with the quality of "speech" used by the gaming community (he was playing D&D back in 1st edition...). He wanted to set up a little "entrance application" that you'd have to fill out to join his game/server/whatever. He'd ask all prospective players to type out a paragraph or 2 about who they were, why they wanted to join, what they could offer...etc. He mentioned that grammar would be noted as well =)
The idea was that, if you even lightly screened people over the internet (ie- set low grammar standards), the "quality" of your group would go up dramatically. Yes, having to write a "report" would turn a lot of people off, but its not like anyone was short for players to play with or servers to play on. I still see the relevance.

-John
I dream of a forum like that someday....

Oh, the irony...

The brain can process mis-spellings as it reads them but an occasional punctuation mark and a paragraph every now and then go a long way towards making long posts easier to read.

Cool On an auto forum

Why do we care about "grammer" [sic] in this forum?

Because it's part of proper human communication.

English may have weird spelling and lots of exceptions to its rules, but we accept that as a tradeoff for the turbocharged power this language gives us . . . when we use it properly.

Change your verb tenses as appropriate, keep the subject-verb agreement topped off, properly inflate the spelling, and English'll serve you for a lot of years.

That is all.

Unfortunately, poor grammar seems so widespread in America today that it is getting harder and harder to communicate effectively. It's not due to lack of education, either. I know plenty of folks with master's degrees who never learned English grammar sufficiently to construct sentences correctly. Sometimes I use poor grammar just because correct usage sounds bizzare.

The next thing you know I'll be posting a thread regarding off-topic posts about kids, work, etc.
