Anyone Heard of this Food Reaction?

I have a violent new reaction only to clams. It has happened twice before in the last year, and again this weekend. In every case they were cooked, either in a soup, steamed, or in clams casino. The reaction starts after 1-6 hours and brings on extreme cramps and lower GI 'distress', ie the Hershey squirts every 15 minutes. I can't eat or drink, or even sip water because it causes the cramping to start again for 5-10 minutes, and everything goes right through. The episode lasts for about 24 hours, and then I'm fine again.

I've read about general allergic reactions to seafood or shell fish, but this is isolated only to clams. I've eaten mussels, shrimp and various fish recently with no problems at all. I'm trying to find out whats unique about clams that causes this. In the mean time, I must remember: Clams = Bad for me!

Likely you got a bad (for you) clam. Allergic reactions happen soon after ingestion.

Very unfortunate. As it is March (a month without a "J") you should be safe enough with the clams, but allergies can descend upon you at any time in your life and can rapidly increase in intensity of reaction. I have a few friends so afflicted.

You may find that other shellfish eventually produce the same reaction.

My ex-wife's grandmother, born/raised in Maine and a B&B owner/operator, developed such a bad allergy that she could not handle any shellfish or lobster. She consequently had to hire someone to cook at the B&B!

Be careful. You might want to try isolating the ingredients to check to see if it is just the clam or something else (milk - symptoms sound like my lactose intolerance) that is in the recipes. A doctor should be able to help. Maybe.

Food poisoning.....I hate that. In any event, stay away from those clams.

Well, I'd certainly avoid the clams from now on, whatever it was that caused the reaction.

I hope this allergy doesn't include Bearded Clams as well!
