Great pic, Michael. Kudos on having a couple boys who could stand that close together and not start bickering and shoving!

I'm counting down the days until my oldest can run the garden tractor. Maybe then, with the mowing burden lifted, my lawn won't look like crap.

Believe me, it's a mixed blessing.
My oldest was running the big tractor one day and didn't notice that one of the rear tires was almost flat. I do not know how you can operate a tractor with tires that are 5' tall and not realize that one of them is flat but I do know that $472 (of my money) later I had a new tire.

With what it costs to raise kids, it would have been cheaper to buy a commercial zero radius machine.
There are other (non-0monetary) benefits to having kids.

Typically they only WANT to help with yard work until they are actually old enough to be ABLE to help.

I bought a manual push mower for my kids to run in one section of the yard where it was flat and I wanted the grass to look better than what the Snapper could give me. Even paying them did not get them to push the mower more than once. It is hard work!!!

I learned my lesson... our kids (or at least mine) are too soft. If you can get yours to continue doing the chores, that would be a great accomplishment

I tried that too.....and my daughter was really excited. For about 10 minutes.

That's cool. I am already enjoying yard work with my son. He always wants to go out and pick up sticks. He's not very good at it since he picks them up and throws them a few feet from where he finds them. He has a few more years to go before he can use the mower.

Completing chores = video game time. Very powerful motivator. No work, no game.

This chore is new this year and I've been surprised how well they do it. Not so good on straight lines, though. Between the criss crossing, turning around, and going in every which direction, I think they cover the yard five times.

It wears them out, but it's not that hard to push. The trick is to keep moving.

Chad, build a fire pit. It can be lit only when all the sticks are off the ground, broken up, and put into the pit. Boys love a good fire. It's officially for "outdoor cooking"...

Great pic Michael!

I'm also looking forward to harnessing the apparently boundless energy of my two boys.

I woke up every Saturday morning to a chore list for my brothers and I. Checkboxes beside everything. If you got up early, you could do the easy ones and still have your share done. Then the lazy brother would be left with all the crappy chores, so there was some motivation to simply get things done. We learned a lot of good skills this way - painting, woodworking, lawn care, etc.

I very much plan on carrying on this tradition, and as SwampYankee mentioned, there won't be a debate on the matter.

Thanks, they’re both great kids.

The lawn is an exotic blend of weeds, clover, and grass. It’s green, though.

Will you spank them for shirking these duties?
