Question for you dapper guys

Jeans and tie? I do that sometimes but apparently as I've found out not too long ago online some people think it's a fashion faux pas. I never saw anything wrong with wearing a nice pair of classic Levi's 501 with a buttoned oxford with a tie and a pair of loafers (Bass, Cole Haan, or Dexter). I don't wear lowriders (do guys actually wear those?), baggy jeans, or some guady designer jeans, just straight-legged blue or black button-fly 501 jeans. I'm not big on fashion, so I must admit I feel a bit weird asking for fashion advice. I like to say that I wear what looks nice and comfortable, yet I also don't want to look tacky or sloppy in certain social settings (work, for example). We can wear jeans at work. I like the classic and casual look, and I usually prefer jeans over khakis. Sometimes I wear a tie, hence my question.

davestlouis 04-09-2008 12:00 AM

I'm no clothes-horse but I'd sooner die than wear jeans unless I'm working in the yard. Further, I think you're mixing your metaphors, dressy shirt and tie with jeans is a no-go.

Having said that, I work in an industry where my dress code includes a solid white shirt with straight collar only, no button down collars, solid navy, black or charcoal suit, dark tie, black lace up shoes(no cordovan or brown, no matter what), no fancy belt buckles, etc. Not the most creative and imaginative industry when it comes to dress, but it's what our customers expect.

Dee8go 04-09-2008 12:00 AM

I wouldn't do it, but my impression is that just about anything goes these days . . . If you do it right, it may come off looking better than some guy wearing a suit, but lacking panache. If you're good-looking to start off, you can get away with just about anything. If you're not, you're always playing catch up.

You work at a funeral home? If you don't, but want to, you won't have to go shopping for work clothes. :D

I would wear nice darker jeans with a dress shirt, but no tie, unless i had a lightweight jacket. (like that rich "redneck" in the picture below)

Then again, what you wear to work, depends on your line of work, and on the business itself. You will have to look around where you work, and decide for yourself.

TylerH860 04-09-2008 12:12 AM

Fashion advice? :D

seems fine to me.

Here's who I pictured wearing something like that.

Not unless it's a bolo tie and western cut shirt.

Oh, and not unless you're Chuck Norris.

davestlouis 04-09-2008 12:16 AM

Funny you mention that Larry, I work at a beautiful funeral home/cemetery/crematory facility. The dress code goes far beyond what I mentioned so far...1 ring per hand, a watch is OK, NO RED TIES, jacket MUST be buttoned in front of families, hands must not be in pockets in front of families, no sunglasses or other colored lenses. The company is very protective of their image and reputation in the community and go to great lengths to make sure we all sparkle every day.

Larry Delor 04-09-2008 12:18 AM

It was the only place that I could imagine, that would have such a strict, and monotone dress code. And, for the most part, I would expect no less.

TheDon 04-09-2008 12:38 AM

pffft.... Disney ... now thats strict...

Jeans and a tie... no. never

WVOtoGO 04-09-2008 01:03 AM

Visit TX, and you'll see it done quite often.

If done right, and at the right time and place – No problem.

It’s even acceptable for the girls…. So long as the butterflies are the right colors.

Chuck can wear jeans and a tie without a shirt.

Hatterasguy 04-09-2008 01:33 AM

Jean's and tie's just don't work.

http://www.neimanmarcus.com/

Look at these guys for some new trendy fashions, I think the look you are thinking of has been dead since the 80's or 90's. I think these days tie's are strictly for suit's.

frosty 04-09-2008 02:13 AM

I grew up in the midwest, in the 80s, so maybe this is where I got my fashion sense? Actually, I'm not about trendy, just classy or having the classic look or whatever. Okay, I guess I may have to stop this fashion montrosity of wearing jeans with a tie. Well, I still actually don't feel it's wrong, but for some reason I've become a bit self-conscious about it.

What about jeans and loafers?

Hatterasguy 04-09-2008 02:15 AM

I'm far from an expert, but I think if you ditch the tie your probably good.

From my limited knowledge I beleive these days jeans are casual, IE non business related.

You probably would be better off with a nice pair of designer jeans for such a look. Look through some mens fashion catalog's. I think the guys wearing jeans, button downs, and loafers are going for a different look than you are thinking. Think spiky hair, and clubbing.

G-Benz 04-09-2008 02:23 AM

I hail from the Midwest too, but as Hatterasguy said, it's a fashion holdover from the 80's-90's era.

You can still do the "Jeff Foxworthy" jacket, jeans and dress shirt, but personally, I'd swap the dress shirt for a collarless short sleeve shirt instead...

...works in Texas...along with the hat and spurs on the boots!

Sounds like you are on the fast track to baggin some ladies, some good ones.

They DO notice and pay attention to what a man wears. (even if they would publicly deny it.)

You are way ahead of the game here.

Go Frosty!

Tie with 501s? No. Unless it is a string bullet style tie, à la Texas, and you are also wearing cowboy boots and a hat. Other than that, definitely no.

If you want the casual, American L.L.Bean kind of thing, then yes, 501s, loafers and a button down is classic. Just leave out the poor tie. Button shirt up, leave one button undone for a classic look, two undone if you are feeling a little bit more Chuck.

All IMHFO.

MattBelliveau 04-09-2008 10:53 AM

Tie and jeans? Maybe, but only under a nice fitting sweater. And no dress shoes or loafers. Make it either boots (or those low cut Thinkgs that look like boots, casual shoes?) or a flattering pair of white tennis shos (low cut, no Nike Hightop basketball shoes). No, I'm not gay.

raymr 04-09-2008 11:11 AM

It may be a regional thing. You wouldn't see that combo in the DC area unless you're at a convention with out of towners. Same with brown suits. I would save the jeans and string tie for a night out at Billy Bob's. :) But it really depends on what's acceptable in your area, and what impression you want to make. Don't forget the adage "the clothes make the man", since new people build their impression of you based on the first thing they see, which is your duds.

el presidente 04-10-2008 11:02 AM

I wish I could help answer your query, but I am far from being considered "dapper" :(

Stoneseller 04-10-2008 11:40 AM

I have to admit that I've followed the "Norm Abrams" fashion style for most of my working life. I don't do much plaid flannel, I prefer solid color chamios on top of my jeans. Standard blue collar stuff.

Graplr 04-10-2008 12:05 PM

If you are over 23, then it is hard to pull off the jeans and a tie.

Jeans and a tie are considered casual, so don't try to dress it up or wear it at a place where one is supposed to be dressed up, such as work (unless you are a college professor :D ), funerals, church, wedidngs, etc...

To make it work it must look somewhat casual, not dressy. A nice pair of jeans (dark and neat, no fades and tears or such), a casual buttoned shirt (usually white), top button open and tie slightly loose with a few options for shows such as tennis shoes (but not running shoes, think white pumas) or sometimes can pull it off with shinier shoes. As Matt mentioned if you put a nice v-neck sweater with a color that suits you, it can be done by the older gent for a date or a family get-together such as thanksgiving.

And no, I'm not gay either, but I learned a while ago that women who look good like guys that look good. I absorbed fashion early on because the better I dressed, the hotter the women I brought home... It was a simple equation.

SwampYankee 04-10-2008 12:25 PM

I did in H.S. only because we had to wear a tie on game days.

I've got some different colored Cabela's and LL Bean casual slacks, the fabric is actually jean-like, that are very comfortable and look good with your aforementioned attire.

PaulC 04-10-2008 12:38 PM

I too am having a fashion dilemma: Should I wear white wingtips or white loafers with a white belt?

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or serious... :D

If you are serious, you need to add more details about the rest of your attire.

PaulC 04-10-2008 01:07 PM

Well, as we are in spring, I have a nice light blue three-piece suit that I want to trot out. Brown shoes and belt appear to be a faux-pas and black leather accessories seem too, well, blah. I don't know if I can get away with loafers while wearing a suit. I haven't yet decided on a tie, but something bright and spring-like is likely.

Dee8go 04-10-2008 01:41 PM

Polyester or natural fiber, Paul?

raymr 04-10-2008 01:46 PM

Is the belt above or below the ribcage?

I believe it's a wool/poly blend, suitable for 3-season wear.

ramonajim 04-10-2008 01:50 PM

So I'm guessing some of you guys wouldn't find my wardrobe "dapper" ;)

http://amex101.com/albums/Misc_Pix/DSCN0295.sized.jpg

This peasant coat, and my newly acquired dark rose Tibetan shirt are among my favorites.

And yes, I wear them with jeans.

Did find my tie collection post-move. Got some of the silly things dating back to the 70's. Other than funerals, haven't worn one in probably 5 years.....

Well, the belt fits through the belt loops on the pants, so definitely below the ribcage as well as the lovehandles.

Hatterasguy 04-10-2008 01:54 PM

C'mon Paul, dust off those mesh loafers and release your inner Sonny Crockett...a Testarossa would complement the look nicely. :D

I actually have a pair of Allen Edmonds mesh-topped wingtips in my closet. Color? "Chili", which is a tan with a bit of a redwood-like tint. $200+ and wore them once, which was plenty.

Well, I'm not attending a wedding. I just want to parade around the town square and look a wee bit cheesy.

What? I wear a brown belt with brown loafers or brown Dr. Martins or a black belt with black Dr. Martins or any of my black boots. Boy, I must be arrested vy the fashion police! Okay, I guess I won't do the jeans and tie anymore since having read all the posts I will feel a bit self-conscious now. The thing is that I don't like slacks, more the way they are designed. When it comes to dress pants, it's usually khakis or chinos, or whatever you call them. I prefer tan or light beige, but I am considering black ones to go with some of my shirts. I actually like the jeans (straight leg, preferably Levi's 501) and loafer look, plus a nice Polo longsleeve buttoned shirt. Classic?

Lately I've been finding myself preferring solid colors over plaid, which I happen to have many shirts in that "color." I really want to get a nice tweed jacket with leather elbow patches! Grr, but it's hard to find one that is my size (sm).

So professors wear jeans and tie too and not just hicks? :P

Graplr 04-11-2008 11:08 AM

Paul was just teasing. He was making fun of all of this and going with the white belt and shoes.

Brown belt and brown shoes or black belt with black shoes, exactly correct.

No, I wasn't making fun of anything. It's a real issue for me as I'm going out in my matching car on Sunday and I want my attire to be impeccable:

Jesus, who did that to that car? Well at least it's in the same color family as the garbage cans.

Kind of reminds me of the color of my first car, a '57 Chevy in "Tropical Turquoise".
