That breech mechanism looks like a way to trim one's limbs.

It's actually quite safe. With a round loaded there's no recesses to snag fingers as the breech closes. Closely trimmed nailes ARE recommended.

The way the loader snatched his hand free after sliding the round home looked like he'd been bitten.

That was the breech block pushing his hand out of the way.
Believe me, the Army doesn't want gun crews losing fingers in the heat of battle.

Those guys are SERIOUS gun enthusiasts! I'd hate to have to pay for a box of THAT ammo.

His dad got arrested.

I'd still be afraid of that breech, why did they have to make it spring loaded...you can slam a breech shut pretty freaken quick when you are motivated.

You have to remember that when the shell is in the chamber the base of the shell will be flush, or very nearly, with the rear of the chamber. There would be nothing to catch your fingers on. The breech closing will just push you out of the way. Now, trip the breech without a round chambered with your hand in there and all bets are off!

Regarding getting into that kind of ownership it seems that most hardcore enthusiasts are dealers. There are Federal, state, etc. licensing that allows you to own, well, just about anything..... Provided you operate as a business, selling, dealing, manufacturing of arms, etc. Some machine gun collectors are also dealers or manufacturers. This allows you to own post '86 dealer sample machine guns as long as they are for sale. This may sound like a loophole, and I guess it could be considered one but you would have to actually have a place of business and do what you say you do to keep it all legal.
